Chapter 8: The mountain pass
We were clambering through rock and snow. I was walking through the middle of the group when I hear someone fall from behind. I turn and see Frodo scrambling to his feet. The Ring falls to the ground shinning in the snow. Boromir then picks it up by the chain and just stares at it like he is infatuated and absorbing its power. "Boromir?" Aragorn warns him and steps forwards "It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing...such a little thing." Boromir recites and what he is saying is true but the way he's saying it is like he's under a spell. "Boromir...give the ring to Frodo" Aragorn quietly says as he moves his hand to grip his sword. Then suddenly Boromir breaks his trance and is back to normal "as you wish. I care not" he states and ruffles Frodo's hair and turns to walk away.As we keep on moving up the mountain it gets colder and colder, and the snow is getting deeper coming up to my knees making it difficult to walk. I'm pulling my clothes nearer to me to trap the warmth but it does no good. Legolas lightly walks across the top of the snow because he's an elf and he can do that apparently. "Show off elf" I mutter but obviously due to his extra good elf hearing he hears it and turns and sticks his tongue out at me.
He then suddenly pauses a voice sweeps by in the wind. "There is a fell voice in the air" he exclaims and looks across the mountains, people in middle earth use old English which is not good cause I don't know what fell even means I haven't been school in a while I laugh to myself.
"It's Saruman" Gandalf states while thunder rumbles all around us and rocks fall from above. "He's trying to bring down the mountain. Gandalf! We must turn back!" Aragorn shouts urgently.
"No!" Gandalf shouts and raises his staff and chants in some speech that I do not understand. We all look up in horror as a huge snow avalanche tumbles down towards us! I didn't know what to do but then I get pulled against the cliff face as snow crashes onto the narrow ledge. I see now that it was Legolas that saves me, again. He shields me from the on coming snow poring towards us. Aragorn shields Frodo and Sam as snow piles around them. Within moments the pass is blocked and we all stuck in the snow. All I see is white and I start to panic but I was able to dig upwards and free myself. I picked myself up while heaving for breath. I help Legolas up and look to Boromir and Aragorn frantically digging up the hobbits...who are pulled out shivering and looking terrified."We must get off the mountain! Make for the gap of Rohan and take the West road to my city" Boromir exclaims over the noise of the wind "The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard." Aragorn retorts.
"We cannot pass over the mountain. Let us go under it. Let us go through the mines of Moria." Gimli points out since he has been saying that all this time but he does not know what actually is in the mines. Gandalf has a concerned look on his face, "let the ringbearer decide." Gandalf finally states. "We will go through the mines." Frodo says and Gandalf slowly nods.
"So be it."Authors note:
