Chapter 9: The mines

We headed for the mines of Moria and I was terrified. I know what's going to happen in there and I am not prepared for my first fight.

"Hey why do you look so scared?" a deep voice asks from behind me, I turn and see Legolas.
"I'm not, my legs are just tired that's all" I reply.  I cant tell him the future or something bad might happen. Like going back in time you are not allowed to tell the past what's going to happen in the future.

"You might be able to have a rest when we get to the mines" he says and smiles,
"yh maybe" I state and look to the ground hoping he don't ask anymore questions. We were walking along the far shore of a dark lake right below great looming cliffs.
"The walls of Moria!" Gimli exclaims in excitement. Gandalf touches the smooth rock wall between the trees, slowly, faint lines appear of silver running through the stone. "Itidin...it mirrors only starlight and moonlight" Gandalf tells us and looks towards the moon as it rises over the mountains. The lines grow and become more clear as it forms a glowing arch of ancient letters and symbols. "It reads, "The door of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter." Gandalf translates "What do you suppose that means?" Merry asks stepping towards Gandalf. I sit down on a nearby rock letting my feet rest for a bit.

"It's quite simple. If you are a friend, speak the password and the doors will open." Gandalf explains like its plain easy, he raises his arms and speaks an incantation in elvish I think. Gandalf carries on mumbling spells in his best efforts to open the door. While I look over at Aragorn who is setting Bill the pony free, I look at Sam who has tears in his eyes watching Bill leave.

Legolas walks over and sits on a rock close by me but does not say anything, even with no words spoken I feel safe beside him, he is a good friend to have. I laugh at Merry and Pippin who are chucking rocks into the lake but Aragorn quickly stops them "Do not disturb the water" Aragorn watches anxiously as the Ripples appear to grow, even Boromir looks worried towards the water. "It's a riddle" I hear Frodo call out,
"Speak, friend, and enter. What's the Elvish for friend?" Frodo asks
"Oh...mellon." I speak out faster than Gandalf, well I have to have some input in this quest. With that, the rock face silently divides in the middle and two great Doors swing outwards revealing a blackness deeper than the night. We all enter the Blackness, something in the water stirs I know what's going to happen so I keep an eye out.

We all step warily into the darkness of Moria. "So, master elf, you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the dwarves; roaring fires, malt beer, red meat off the bone. This, my friend, is the home of my cousin, Balin...and they call this a Mine... A mine!" Gimli explains and snorts while Legolas rolls his eyes which makes me giggle.  "Rolling your eyes Legolas?" I snigger pretending to be shocked which makes Legolas look at me raising his eyebrows. A Glow from Gandalf's Staff suddenly lights the chamber. We all look in horror at the dwarf Skeletons that are everywhere, clearly the dead of the old battle, the rusting armour and shields are peppered with arrows and axes. Even though I expected this it still sicken me to look at.

"This is no mine...it's a tomb!" Boromir shouts in disgust, Gimli runs forward to look at all the skeletons "Oh...no...no..no... !" he cries. Legolas pulls an arrow out of a skeleton, "Goblins!".

We all draw swords except for me and Legolas who draw our bows and point an arrow towards the mines and back away, towards the Entrance. "We make for the Gap of Rohan. We should never have come here." Boromir tells us all but we hear a yell, as I turn I see Frodo suddenly get pulled to the ground. A long tentacle is wrapped around Frodo's ankle and is dragging him towards the lake. Aragorn and Boromir rush forward. Aragorn severs the Tentacle holding Frodo, and pulls him to safety. Boromir hacks at the other writhing Limbs. 20 more tentacles ripple out of the Lake! I shoot an arrow hitting one of the tentacles but it just makes him angry. The dark water boils as the hideous beast lashes out at us. Ok this is more scary in person. Again the creature grabs Frodo and pulls him to the lake, Frodo is flung in the air as we all battle the creature. Aragorn hacks at a tentacle...Frodo is released, falling into Boromir's arms.

"Into the mines!" Gandalf shouts "Legolas!" Boromir warns, I knock an arrow again and Legolas and I shoot into the creature's head, gaining a few seconds for Aragorn and Boromir as they race out of the water with Frodo. We all hurry back away from the creature retreating into the Mines. With a shattering echo, the creature rips the doors away, creating a rock slide that crashes down the Cliff Face. Within seconds, tons of rock seal the doorway throwing us all into Pitch Black darkness.
"We now have but one choice...we must face the long dark of Moria. Be on your guard...there are older and fouler things than the Orcs in the deep places of the world" Gandalf says and lights his staff up more as we head further into the mines.
