Chapter 30:
I toss and I turn all night feeling the darkness on middle earth. I think about Legolas' confession, he had drank a lot during the drinking game. It must of been because of the alcohol, he cant possibly like me, I'm just me. A mortal woman from a different world. I don't even belong in middle earth. Which reminds me that before I leave I want to know why this has happened to me. After hours of thinking I eventually slowly fall asleep.
The next morning I get dressed and even though I'm alone I feel stressed about what happened between me and Legolas. I also keep thinking about my family who are probably worried that I've gone missing. My thoughts are interrupted when Braelyn walks in, "thank god you're up, we need to get going" she says picking up her belt of weapons, "going? Where?" I ask getting worried.
"Yes you missed a lot last night. Pippin looked into the Palantir and Sauron saw him but pippin also saw the future, he and Gandalf have rode to Minis Tririth for help in the war" Braelyn explains. "I have missed a lot" I laugh as we walk out and I pick up my weapons on the way out."Just to the encampment. It's tradition for the women of the court to farewell the men. The men have found their captain, they will follow you into battle, even to death. You have given us hope." I hear Eowyn say to Aragorn, I know she wants to go to war with us.
"So it is before the walls of Minas Tirith, the doom of our time will be decided." I hear Theoden shout.
"Oh that sounds like a grand time, can not wait to face doom" I sarcastically say as I walk looking for a horse hearing people snigger at my comment.
"Can I ride with you Braelyn? My head is filled with too many thoughts" I ask her as she gets on her horse.
"Yh sure," she replies confused as she helps me up and we start riding following other soldiers as we start the journey.Legolas's p.o.v
I see her ride off with Braelyn further ahead as I stay in line with Aragorn and Theoden. She hasn't spoken to me at all since last night.
"Aye, lad she's a hard one to figure out " Gimli teases behind me as I just sigh at his comment.
"Thought it was going well from what I saw last night" Aragorn pitches in, and he's right she was fine last night but this morning she has avoided me.
"It was going well, great actually but this morning she's just gone off, I'm very confused. I know how I feel, but I do not know how she really feels about me. Well she said she liked me last night but this morning doesn't feel like that" I pour out my thoughts to them."Aye lad she's probably just afraid of this war she is about to face. Then feelings for you someone not from her world isn't gonna help with that and she is mortal, ya know she has a lot to think about" Gimli adds and it makes me think. I keep forgetting that she is mortal, it doesn't bother me but I guess it would be hard to work it out. But now presently I just want to be with her.
Caitlins's p.o.v
We have arrived at the camp, its dark, misty and just plain spooky. Dunharrow its called.
"Six thousand spears. Less than half of what I'd hoped for." Theoden is angry and hopeless, do we even have a chance of winning? Probably not, but they do in the stories so I have hope.
"Every hour lost hastens Gondor's defeat. We have till dawn. Then we must ride." Aragorn states."The horses are restless, and the men are quiet." I hear Legolas speak, just thinking about last night makes me feel anxious. But its true the horses are going crazy and the scary mountain gap isn't helping.
"They grow nervous in the shadow of the mountain." Eomer explains to us,
"not surprised its creepy" I point out entering their conversation.
"That road there; where does that lead?" Gimli asks. "It is the road to the Dimholt; the door under the the mountain." Legolas answers him as he walks to stand beside me, I can feel the tension in the air but that is probably just me overthinking things. "None who venture there ever return. That mountain is evil." Eomer states, which does not help my nerves. I look around and see Aragorn staring into the mountain.
"Aragorn, let's find some food." Gimli shakes him out of his trance as we walk together to find a spot to sit. We sit with Aragorn to my left and Braelyn to my right, with Legolas on the other side of Aragorn with Gimli.
Soon Braelyn, Gimli and Aragorn stand up at the same time and go there separate ways leaving me and Legolas alone, great. I was in need of sleep though. "I'm going to get some sleep... goodnight" I stand and wave as I head for my tent with Braelyn. I walk in and see her role her eyes at me. "Why are you doing this?" she asks, "just, I know your reasons and it is understandable, yes. But he literally looks heart broken every time you leave him." Braelyn stands above me looking quite intimidating. I feel a tear fall down my cheek. "I am not good with relationships okay, not good when someone actually likes me, especially not an elf in a world I do not know" I spit out, sitting up from the floor.
"I know Cait but push through that shell and live for today, we are going to war soon." Braelyn sits back down, "rant over" she sighs and we both start laughing.
"Your a good best friend, ya know that, quite harsh though" I laugh cause I know she spoke the truth.I wake up to the sound of talking, Braelyn and I walk out our tent to see Aragorn walking away.
"Just where do you think you're off to?" I hear Gimli question.
"Not this time. This time you must stay, Gimli." I hear Aragorn reply. Wait what stay?
"Have you learned nothing of the stubbornness of dwarves?" Legolas walks forward with a cute smirk on his face, okay concentrate Caitlin.
"Might as well accept it. We're going with you, Laddie" Gimli states and gets on the horse behind Legolas.
Braelyn looks to me confused in what to do, do we go with them, we have always gone with them. We stand stubbornly cause we definitely do not want to split up from them.
"Caitlin, Braelyn get on a horse you coming as well then, we need a woman to keep us on track." Aragorn shouts as I smile getting on a horse and following them out of camp.
"And I don't thing Legolas would survive if we left without Caitlin" Aragorn teases as I feel my face get a lot warmer red and I look to Legolas who laughs shaking his head at Aragorn's comment. We approach a mountain door, it is absolutely terrifying. "What kind of army would linger in such a place?" Gimli questions his thoughts out loud.
"One that is cursed." Legolas answers him in a deep tone. He continues,
"Long ago the Men of the Mountain swore an oath to the last king of Gondor to come to his aid, to fight. But when the time came, when Gondor's need was dire, they fled, vanishing into the darkness of the mountain. And so Isildur cursed them never to rest, until they had fulfilled their pledge.""The very warmth of my blood seems stolen away." Gimli grumbles in front of us. I understand how he feel, as soon we drew near the mountain I suddenly felt cold inside.
"The way is shut. It was made by those who were dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut." Legolas reads the writing on the door which is in a language I don't even recognise.
Our horses buckle as we all climb off them and they run down the path away from the mountain, "I'm with them I want to run as well" Braelyn states, I agree that mountain does not look pleasant.Aragorn soon enters the mountain "I do not fear death".
"Um he might not, but I do" I state looking into the darkness. Legolas slides his hand into mine which comforts me massively and we follow Aragorn into the mountain with Braelyn and Gimli following behind.
