The Unknown = Limbo (Over the Garden Wall)

So this theory claims that The Unknown in Over the Garden Wall is actually Limbo or Purgatory, a realm between life and death, where one's soul is simply trapped and cannot move on. So the theory says that half-brothers Wirt and Greg are actually dying in the river at the end of Chapter nine which is really Chapter zero and is being used as a flash back. They almost get hit by a train and fall into the river. They are knocked unconscious and are slowly sinking and drowning. They are then transported into the Unknown as they travel there while nature is looking at whether or not they die. All the magical creatures they encounter are really just spirits who are determining their finally resting places. The Beast is the Devil who kidnap's his victims and turns them in wood trees. In Chapter eight angels take Greg to Cloud City which is obviously Heaven. The Cloud Queen gives him one wish which is to go home but Wirt can't go with him because he has been claimed by The Beast. So instead he wishes to trade places with Wirt and is taken by The Beast. All of this is very relatable to Dante's Inferno which is about a man who is travelling in the after-life in all nine areas.

There's even more. Beatrice guides the boys through The Unknown. In Dante's Inferno an angel of the same name helps Dante through his trip through Heaven. You will also notice in one episode a headstone that says Quincy Endicott who they meet in Chapter five. They dig up graves which may be where their bodies will chose a final resting place. They are also told by the residents of Pottsville if they're ready to join them yet.
