Chapter 41 - Just how fast the night changes

I watch Hayes walk up the garden and sigh. What is he going to sort out? Will he dump Megan? Or will they still be together the next time I see them? Everything always ends like this: me, confused as ever, my friends off with their boyfriends and Hayes going back to Megan. A harsh October wind whips my hair in the tiny hut and I fold my arms over the batgirl logo on my chest.

I walk back the party and I see Kaitlyn and Alyssa standing on the patio.

"Hey, didn't I promise I would come back!" Kaitlyn says and she smiles. "Where did you gt to?"

"Just having a bit of a break." I shout over the music. "I have to go to my cheer competition tomorrow so I can't be too hungover."

"Sophie. Guess what time it is?" Alyssa interrupts.

"What time is it Alyssa?"

"DANCE TIME!" She shouts and pulls me into the circle. How she has so much energy I cannot understand. She begins twisting her body fast and then falls over. I realise how drunk she is and we hoist her up.

"Alyssa you are going inside."

"Put her in one of the spare rooms." Kyle says.

"No I want to party." She whimpers and I call Noah over.

"She is a bit out of it. Help me take her inside." We wrestle with her until she is inside. We walk her upstairs and then, at the top, she crashes out on the floor. I groan and we pick her up by her legs and arms and lie her on a bed. She begins snoring almost instantly.

"Hey, I'll stay with her for a bit and you go and have fun." Kyle says. I thank him then run back downstairs to carry on partying.

I am back dancing with some other friends. I have had a few more drinks and now everything is a blur. I feel really happy and I can't stop laughing.

"I saw Hayes come out of the hut when you were in there. What happened?" One of my friends yells over the music.

"We were just chatting. We needed to sort some things out."

"I guess that means you are friends again?"

"I guess so."

"I heard from someone that he wanted to break up with Megan."

"Really?"

"Uh huh." She says.

"But I heard that he wants to stay with her." Another girl from my math class leans in to the conversation. I shake my head and groan.

"He is one confusing boy." I moan.

Suddenly Christy Morris, Megan's friend who took my seat in the canteen, leans over and tells me to come talk to her.

"What's up?" I say nonchalantly.

"I just wanted to tell you something." She pulls me off the dancefloor and into a secluded corner. She must have something really important to say.

"I'm sorry I was horrible to you Sophie." She says. "I hope you can accept my apology but I'm cool if you don't want to."

"Of course I do."

"Well, me and Megan aren't really friends anymore. Kaitlyn and Alyssa told me what's been going on and I broke it off with her."

"Oh my god..."

"Well, to make it short and sweet, Megan is only going out with Hyaes to make you jealous. She told me Hayes always talks about

you and she wanted to hurt you because she was envious of you."

"Oh my god." I repeat. "Christy, thanks for telling me this." I pull her into an awkward hug then she drags me back to the dancefloor.

We spin around the patio, dancing with others from school, until we are pooped. I tell them I am going to sit down so I move away. I see Kaitlyn smoking with a bunch of boys so I go over.

"You alright hun?" She slurs and fist bumps me.

"Yeah, I need a cigarette. Doe anyone have one?" I ask though I have barely smoked in my life. One of Kyle's mates hands me one and I roll it impatiently between my fingers.

"Lighter?" I say and the boys flicks on the flame and hold it to my cigarette. I take a long drag then thank him. I walk off, going to sit on a little stone wall halfway down the garden. I see Hayes walking up the garden. He walks up to Megan who is sitting on a bench and grabs her to have a talk. I inhale on the cigarette and then offer it to one of the boys. He blows smoke rings into the air and then gives it back. I stub it out on the ground and then carry on watching Hayes. They have gone behind some people and all I can see is Megan shaking her head. For a split second I think I see Hayes lean into her and... they kiss?

After all that has happened...

I stand up and pace back to the crowd on the dancefloor. I can't watch anymore. Somehow, whenever something goes my way, it always fails.

A heavy house tune is blaring through the speakers and I spot Kaitlyn and Noah in the centre. I push though to join them and start dancing.

"How's Alyssa?" I yell to Kyle. He gives me a thumbs up then mimicks being sick so I get the idea. Kaitlyn has started grinding on Noah like many of the other girls so I pull a random by from beside me and start dancing with him. He is black out drunk but I bite my lip and play along as if we were together. He holds my hips and I grind in time to the music. Suddenly, in the corner of my eye, I spot Hayes. His mouth has dropped.

"Oh my god."

"What babe?" the boy slurs.

"I have to go." I yell and run after Hayes. He has gone inside the house and, only after I ask several people, I spot him by the door. I chase after him whilst he runs out of the front door. The street is empty now, only a few cars dotted here and there and I take a quick breath by the door.

"Hayes!"

"Fuck off!"

"Hayes, that was nothing."

"Go away." He yells as he walks to the street.

"Hayes please listen I saw you and Megan. I made mistake."

"Me and Megan are..." Suddenly I hear the squeal of brakes and I am blinded by a cars headlights. Then, as I yell out at Hayes to move, I hear the thump of his body hitting the car bonnet.

I'm not very good at writing these author notes thingies but here goes! Thank you everyone who has read this far! the book is nearly finished and i couldn't be prouder of it! The next few chapters will be wrapping up everything that has happened in the story so stick around to find out!
