“Be aggressive, be be aggressive!” It is Friday and the football game so myself and the rest of the group of cheerleaders stand on the field, shouting for the football team. The footballers run out on to the field waving at the screaming crowd. I spot Hayes and see he is waving in my direction. I wave slightly then see his eyes are above me. I turn and see Megan in the stand above me.
I roll my eyes at their soppyness then run into my position for
the stunt section. We put up our flyer, a tiny freshman, wait for her to pull the position then catch her when she jumps down. The game has begun so we cheer on the players, but I am only doing it half-heartedly.
At half time Kaitlyn begs me to go and see Noah with her so we trek round to where the players are and they chat for a bit. They look really cute holding hands so I pull out my phone and snap a couple of pics to send to them. I see Alyssa run to Kyle and jump into his arms, then he spins her round. I smile sadly then start to walk back to the rest of the cheerleaders. Megan and Hayes are walking in front of me, holding hands, cheek to cheek. I rush past them trying to push away my jealousy.
“Sophie! What's up!” Hayes calls after me cheerfully. I whip round to face them both, their faces plastered with grins.
“Oh... not much... Just going back to the other girls.” I say sullenly.
“Do you wanna maybe get some pizza with us later? A group of us are going after the game.” Megan asks me. They are both smiling sweetly so I can't help but say yes. When I walk away hayes grins at me and I crack a small smile.
…
It's the last minute of the game and Noah is racing down down the field to try and score the tiebraking touchdown. Thecrowd is going mental and I am screaming at the top of my lungs. We watch as he dives down with the ball, the defence diving in to tackle him but, after a swift roll, he smashes the ball on the line and the crowd screams in joy. The other team walk off, heads down but we all run on to the field to congratulate the players. I see Kaitlyn, Noah, Kyle and Alyssa together and I am about to walk over when Megan runs past me, knocking me down, on her way to see Hayes. I see her jump into him and he spins her, like he used to with me. I feel the jealousy bubbling up inside of me but, like I have to, I push it away and smooth down my cheer skirt. Suddenly a hand appears in front of me and I look up to see Tanner Michaelson, one of the linebackers, standing above me.
“You need a hand?” He offers and I smile gratefully and grab it. He hoists me up gently and grins at me.
“Thanks Tanner!” I say, feeling my cheeks burn when I sense everyone is staring at us.
“No problem! You okay?”
“Yeah, I'm fine.” I glance in Hayes' direction and see both him and Megan staring. I take a deep breath and decide to invite him along with us to the pizza place.
“Sure I would love to come!” He says so we walk to where the rest of the group is standing. Alyssa and Kaitlyn tow me away from him to interrogate me.
“You and Tanner huh?” Kaitlyn grins at me, her eyes glinting.
“He helped me up. No big deal.” I shake it off but the smirk at me and Alyssa winks.
“Guys, c'mon nothing will happen. I just invited him to come with us.”
“You invited him huh?” Alyssa winks again, which is starting to annoy me.
