I walk into cheerleading alongside Molly with a scowl on my face. Because none of the girls or boys here go to my school I am saved from being ignored even more. I focus on the conditioning and the killer workouts, not even breaking a sweat as my attention is too focused on my anger. Madison asks me multiple questions and finally manages to get what is wrong with me out. I tell her everything whilst we stretch and when we are done she gives me a huge hug.
"You can always come hang out with me and my friends y'know." She says sweetly but I know it won't be the same as my old friends. Ever since Megan came along I had been feeling more and more left out, but I hadn't even realised... I sigh thinking about memories from summer: the fair, the lake party and ust hanging with them at the mall. I miss Kaitlyn and Alyssa the most; I have no one to share my secrets with and ask for advice. No one to help me get over my killer break up. I can't talk to Molly - she is way to joking about the whole boyfriend situation and I only see Madison when I am in the middle of a routine, sweating like a pig whilst working out or on the competition mat.
"I can't believe our first competition is so soon." Madison stresses and I remember too. We have been working on the routine non-stop since the start of the year and we only have the new pyramid section to complete (the one we had at the show offs was WAY too easy). Coach kayla has been begging me to try stunting again, ever since I perfected my needle, but I have said no every time she begged. I can't seem to get over my thing about heights.
"To your places!" kayla yells so we can run through the dance at the end of the routine. I am one of the centre dancers - I don't know why, I have two left feet - alongside bailee and another girl. We get in position and when the music starts I go crazy, powerful arms and sassy face expressions. We get to the end of the section and kayla whoops and cheers.
"On point everyone! But save that sass for the competition!" She grins and the says, "Sophie, I need to talk to you at the end."
...
"Sophie, I really want you to do a stunt." Kayla begs me after practise but I shake my head.
"I can't. I will legitimately faint." I say bluntly. I know I should at least try but I really don't want to have another one of my episodes.
"Fine then. But I am rather disappointed." She says and then walks away. I frown at her back then hear my phone buzz in my backpack. Pulling it out as I walk out of the gym, I feel it vibrate several more times ad when I check I see I have been mentioned on Twitter. I open the app and look at on epost. It is a screenshot of me and Hayes from the vine when we were fishing. Nothing out of the ordinary. Then I see my worst nightmare. #sayes is trending on Twitter.
I gasp as I walk across the tarmac to the car. As I do, Madison runs up next to me.
"Hey do you wanna come get food with me? My mom is gonna drop me at the frozen yogurt place and she can give you a ride back after."
I look at Molly who has heard conveniently heard everything from the car and she nods.
"I'll tell mom where you are." She says then pulls out of the parking lot.
We head to her car and climb in. I feel awkward and kinda dirty sittig on the fancy leather seats, with her posh mom staring at me. But soon we are chatting like friends and when we arrive at the frozen yogurt place she hands us a twenty dollar bill and says, "I hope you girls have a good time. See you in an hour."
We walk into the building and head over to the glass fronted fridges with tonnes of toppings and sauces in. Madison orders something strawberry-ish and I order plain frozen yogurt with kiwi and chocolate chips. The guy serves our treats then we head for a round table I the window. It is early evening and the sun is starting to set. We chat about cheer and discuss the competition coming up. I'm so nervous for it, especially now our stunt group is in the centre for the new pyramid. My flyer isn't exactly the best but she is small and strong so looks good in the middle.
