Chapter 2 - School's out

“Get in before I leave!” Molly shouts and I dash out of the door. As I hop into my seat she revvs the engine and pulls out of the drive. Soon we are rolling down the street, away from the house.

“I need a drink Moll... Starbucks?”

“Fine. But you owe me one.” She complains and I smile in gratitude. We roll into the parking lot of the local Starbucks and hop out. Inside I order a cotton candy frap and Molly orders a chocolate chip frap. We pay then stroll back to the car, aware that we have ages unil school.

At school I wave goodbye to Molly then run to meet Kaitlyn and Alyssa. Like me they are holding their cheer uniform, ready to hand back to be washed and pressed over summer. We run into a group hug and discuss plans for the summer. Festivals, parties at the lake and the fair.

“I am, like, so excited for this summer!” Alyssa says cheerfully. We have homeroom last period where we have a double period to give out last annoucements and year books.

At eleven we have the last cheer meeting of the year. The three of us sit alongside our team mates, listening to Miss Walker, the cheer coach.

“Girls I am so proud of what you hve accomplished this year. A win at Nationals, performing on the news and a feature in the paper, you girls have achieved a lot in the space of a year.” She sniffs and her eyes fill with tears.

“Aww miss.” I say. We watch as Stacey, the head cheerleader, bring up a bunh of flowers and hands them to her.

When we are leaving we hand her our uniforms and she gives us tiny little teddies dressed in our schools colours.

It is so close to the end of the year now. All of homeroom are watching the second hand on the clock tick round. I skim through my yearbook, laughing at embarassing pictures and signing random people's ones. I stop, suddenly, when I spot a picture right at the end. It's one of me and Hayes, leaning against a tree and grinning at the camera. It strikes me then just how much I really miss him.

BRING-BRING! I jump at the bell. The whole class is cheering while Miss Smith tries to calm us. Much to her dismay we all just stream out of the classroom into the crowd in the hallways.

“It's summer, chica!” Kaitlyn says in my ear and I laugh.

“Lets go before we get trampled.” I shout and we hurry out of the door. In the car park we all embrace.

“You better meet me tomorrow or I will cry.” Kaitlyn says and we promise to meet up.

“Sophie hurry up I want to get a burrito!” Molly says and blow my friends kisses then get in the car. We drive to Taco Bell and Molly picks up a veggie burrito. She halves it with me and we eat in the parking lot. When I get a bit full she takes it off me and scoffs it down.

“You're hungry!” I exclaim and she smiles at me with a mouth full of burrito. I chuckle and when she is finished we drive out of the lot. The sun is still burning brightly in the sky so I wind down the window and let the breeze flutter my hair. For the first time in a while I feel quite happy and it is good to finally be able to be calm and at peace.

When I get home the whole family are acting funny.

“What is wrong with you all?” I ask curiously but they shake me off and get on doing things. Mom is cooking a bunch of food.

“Why are you cooking so much, mom?” I question her.

“Um... there's a food drive at the shelter. They asked me for food.” She says in a nervous voice.

“Okay?” But I don't believe her one bit. She never has time to cook all this food unless there was a really special reason...
