“Hey Sophie. Thank you for coming. We really need this night out.” Elizabeth says when she opens the door.
“It's okay Elizabeth. You look really nice by the way.” I say cheerfully.
“Oh thank you darlin'.” She smiles brightly, showing a clear resemblence between her and her sons.
I stride into their living room, once I have said goodbye to Elizabeth and her husband, where Sky and Hayes are on their stomachs on the floor colouring.
“Sophie!” Sky yells at the top of her lungs and comes running at full speed towards my legs.
“Sky!” I say, trying not to laugh at her. “What are you guys up to?”
“Uh, just... watching tv!” Hayes says, abruptly covering up the fact that he was drawing. I look at the tv set and see that Dora is on the screen. I try not to snicker as Hayes quickly flicks the tv over to MTV.
“Hey I was watching that!” Sky yells. But soon enough she calms down and goes back to drawing.
“What'cha drawing?”
“Horseys! This is Dallas and this is Tex. My favourites. Ever.” She says, making me giggle. I sit down beside Hayes and watch the tv.
“Do you wanna sit on the couch?” He says.
“Yeah su...”
“I do, I do, I do!” Sky says excitedly.
“Fine then Little Miss.” Hayes says and grabs her arms. “Take her ankles.” He instructs me. On the count of three we swing her on to the sofa and she bursts into a fit of giggles. After that we sit squished up with her on our knees.
“Frozen!” She shouts and Hayes switches on the dvd. When the first song starts to play Sky sings all the words, though a little out of tune.
By the time Let it Go is playing we are all up and dancing, singing every single word, even Hayes. He picks up Sky and spins her round like a fairy and zooms her like an aeroplane. Then he plonks her back on the floor and looks back at me.
“Dance?”
“Sure.” I say. He takes my waist and my hand and we dance to Idina Menzel's rather nasally voice. Sky watches us, clapping along, as Hayes twirls me around the room.
…
Hours later after we have finally managed to get Sky to sleep, I am curled up beside Hayes watching an old episode of American Horror Story.
“Hayes, I don't like it.” I say, covering my eyes.
“Come on, it's not that scary.” He says and uncovers my eyes. I grab at his hands to try and cover my sight again but he is too strong. I push back and he wrestles against me. We push and shove, starting to wrestle on the couch until I fall back, letting him win. I realise his arms is around my shoulders. I decide not to fight him but instead I snuggle into him. Soon enough I am feeling drowsy and Hayes is yawning slightly as well.
“Sleep?”
“Sleep.” He says tiredly. I stretch out on the sofa and he fits in beside me. As I lie still I feel his heart – or is it mine – pumping rapidly. This feels so wrong, yet so right at the same time.
