An Awful Choice One Must Make

You soon left Mount Kumotori. Staying any longer increases the chances of Muzan attempting to contact you and finding your location. The last thing you wanted was for him to kill the Kamado's early or at all.

You retreated down the mountain under the cold moonlight. Kie watched your figure grow smaller and smaller with each step til you disappeared.

"Honey, do you worry about the question she asked before she left?" Kie asked her sickly husband. Tanjuro sat on the porch and thought back.

———

[A few moments prior]

"How far are you willing to go for your children?"  You inquired, your voice remarkably unsteady and low, like you had forced out a question you were dreading to ask. "As in... if something ever happened and you had to... die so that your children could live or die with them, which would—"

"I'd die for them," Kie spoke with a resolute expression. The speed of her answer left you speechless. "Y/N, this is a foolish question. What parent would prefer to die with their children if the alternative is that at least they get a chance to live?"

You looked at her for a moment before letting out a quiet laugh, yet it didn't reach your eyes.

"You're right. What a stupid question... but it's a question I still needed to ask."

"Is there something concerning you? Something you saw." Tanjuro asked, and you could only give him a pained expression. You wanted to warn them of the future. To tell them that Muzan will come and slaughter this family and set their eldest son and daughter on a bloody journey.

"I—" the words died on your lips.

You reached into your pockets and handed them tokens. 6 of them were fabric woven charms with a heart being stitched together. The seventh one was a small placard. Painted on it looked to be a mother holding her children, yet the canvas was purely white. Not a dash of colour in sight.

"Take this. Give these charms to your children. Make sure they always have them on hand, no matter what." You explained, your hands slightly trembling.

"What about the other one?" Kie asked, and regret flashed on your face.

"It's for you, Kie. Please always have it on you." You said as you turned to leave.

"Wait!" The couple looked at you, concerned about your mood shift. You were quite an upbeat person, so for you to turn so solemn left them worrying. You stopped in your tracks and took a deep breath before turning around with a luminous smile.

"Relax! No need to be so fearful. They are simply protection charms from my temple. I can't predict everything, so I'm hoping this gives me a little more security." Your voice was cheery and playful—unfortunately, your eyes held a profound sense of tiredness. "Don't dwell on it too much. Toodles!"

You then began your descent momentarily before stopping once more and turning round with another smile, except this one felt heavy.

"Til my dying breath... I'll protect your family no matter what."

———

Tanjuro just hummed. His eyes didn't leave your retreating figure.

"I wish she had told us what she's worried about. I don't like being in the dark if it concerns our family." Tanjuro uttered.

"So why didn't you press her further?"

He contemplated his wife's words before returning to their home.

"She held no animosity, and it seems she deemed it better not to tell us. However, she did assure that she'll protect our family no matter... and I choose to believe that resolve."
