The weight of memory...
The end of every school year always carried a peculiar kind of silence.
It was unlike the peaceful quiet that settled over Hogwarts during the Christmas holidays, when snow blanketed the ancient towers, and laughter still echoed through the corridors as students eagerly anticipated returning home for a few short weeks. Nor was it the tense silence that lingered before examinations, when the castle seemed to hold its breath alongside every anxious witch and wizard desperately trying to memorise one final chapter.
No.
This silence was different.
It was bittersweet.
It was the sound of another year slipping quietly into memory.
The castle, which only days before had been overflowing with excited voices, hurried footsteps and the occasional explosion caused by an overly ambitious student, now rested beneath the warmth of an early summer afternoon. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, bathing the endless stone corridors in golden light, while enchanted suits of armour stood unusually still, as though even they had decided to enjoy the rare tranquillity that arrived once the students had departed.
For the first time in months, Hogwarts felt... empty.
Alice Scamander stood alone inside her office, absentmindedly running her fingers across the edge of her desk before allowing herself a long, exhausted sigh.
Another year. It was difficult to believe how quickly it had passed.
Scattered across the wooden surface were dozens of essays waiting to be archived, lesson plans filled with scribbled notes in the margins, practical examinations she had finally managed to mark only hours before the Hogwarts Express carried the last students away from the castle, and several enchanted quills that had stubbornly refused to stop writing corrections until she physically removed the ink from their tips.
