At Midnight

I snap awake when I hear the sirens.

I fall out of bed to be more exact.

"What the hell...?" I grumble, stumbling over to my rental's window. My crimson eye widens when I see what had woken me up.

The hotel across the street from me was in flames. Firetrucks and police cars were everywhere, people screaming as they exited the collapsing building; some of them on fire themselves.

"Holy shit..." I pull on a pair of shorts and a loose shirt, stumbling outside to the porch. My jaw dropped from the close up look I got, my brain and eyes fighting on what was real and what had to be made up.

The top of the hotel looked like it had been burned off; the steel and brick connecting it to the rest of the building nonexistent. Ash was clouding the sky, the full moon barely shining through anymore. The stars barely showed through the cloud of black and dark grey, and I choked on a clump of ash that had flown into my lungs.

A police man comes over to me, patting me on the back to relieve me of my coughing fit.

"What the hell happened?" I ask, and he shakes his head.

"We have no idea. All we know is that we saw the fire from across the city, as well as some sort of golden light. Do you know anything?" I shake my head, hand rubbing my temple.

"I woke up when the sirens started, I have no idea what happened." I say, leaning against my door as I took in the destruction. It was terrible, it was bloody, it was deadly.

It was beautiful.

I shake my head, retreating back into my house. I get dressed, pulling on a white hoodie and my grey jeans. I pack my back pack with all my school stuff and an extra sandwich to eat for breakfast. No way could I sleep with that image burned in my head.

I lock my door behind me, making sure the open-any key was still in my headphones. I felt a tap on my shoulder, and I looked over to see Sub floating next to me. I smile faintly, and he smiles back.

Together, I walk to the park and sit down on a bench. By the time I had made it, the sirens had faded. The building was still in flames, the golden glow of the fire still showing in the sky.

I sigh, looking up into the sky. I could see the constellations, easily spotting the Big and Little Dipper, Cancer, Leo the Lion, and other star patterns. I could even make out Ragnorak and Glython; both were shining brightly tonight.

"Hey Sub? You know that old myth about the Ragnorak and Glython constellations?" I ask, looking over at the ghostly boy who sat in the air next to me. He shakes his head, and I smile before looking back up at the sky.

"It's said that they shine the brightest when one of the chosen ones of Caridwen and Shadow gazes upon them." Sub smirks, pointing at me. I laugh, shaking my head.

"Nah, I think I would know if I met the two who ripped the realms apart. It's not like you can hide a demon with dark blue hair with ram horns and a tail or a gold-and-black-eyed hottie with black angel wings very easily." I reply, turning on my black and green headphones and putting up my hood.

I sigh, softly singing along to the song by Fall Out Boy.
