Manik finally walked toward Nandini and pulled her into a long, warm hug.He lowered his head and whispered softly into her ear,
"Finally... I feel like I'm home."
Nandini initially didn't understand what he meant.She thought he was talking about the house.But then she realized.He wasn't talking about the place.He was talking about her.She was his home.
The realization brought the brightest smile to her face.She tightened her arms around him.
"Welcome home, Mama."
Manik smiled against her hair.
After standing like that for a few moments, they finally went upstairs together.
As soon as they opened the bedroom door, Nandini noticed Manik had stopped walking.
His eyes had fallen on a frame hanging on the wall.It was a picture from their engagement.
Until then, the frame had only been there with Nandini's picture.
Before leaving for Chennai, she had replaced it with a picture of both of them together.
Manik stared at it for a few seconds.Then he turned toward her.
"When did you put that there?"
Nandini smiled.
"Actually, the day before we left for Chennai."
She looked at the frame.
"I thought... it should be here when we came back."
Manik's expression softened completely.
"That's such a beautiful welcome gift Pondati ."
He stepped closer and gently pecked her lips.
"Thank you."
Nandini smiled shyly.
"Now I will go freshen up."
"Yes, ma'am."
He walked toward the bed and sat down.Then he stretched out for just a moment.He hadn't even realized when his eyes closed.Within minutes, he was fast asleep.The past one-and-a-half to two days had exhausted him.He had been driving almost continuously.He had told everyone that Nandini knew how to drive.But when it actually came to the journey, he hadn't allowed her to take the wheel even once.
Nandini came out after freshening up, wearing comfortable pajamas.The first thing she saw was her husband completely asleep.She smiled.She didn't disturb him.Instead, she pulled the blanket over him properly.They had eaten a heavy breakfast that morning, and although Avni and Moni had arranged lunch for them, Nandini thought they could eat when they woke up.
She quietly joined him on the bed.Almost instinctively, she moved toward him.Manik's arm settled around her.Nandini held him close.And within moments, both of them were asleep.
