It was the night before the Halloween dance, every girl was excitedly chattering about their dates and what they would be dressing as. Emily looked down at her own outfit, her mother had helped her find and make, it was a long black dress with black lace that flowed behind her when she walked. On the shoulders there were black feathers which Hermione had craftily placed down the back of the dress as well, making it a sort of tail. The front made a deep ‘v’ that made a point at a silver circle that was clipped around the middle of the dress. She was going to look stunning in it, but if only she had a date to go with. Hopefully she could dance with someone, but Austin always scared away every single boy…until very recently.

Emily’s thoughts were interrupted when a girl rushed into the dorm, she shared the room and slept in the bed beside Emily. She flounced over and grinned at Emily who raised an eyebrow.

“There’s a boy who wants to see you downstairs, says it’s important,” the girl grinned.

“Thank you…” Emily said confused before quickly walking downstairs, the boy in question was Ryan Cunningham. A sixth year like Emily, he was always nice enough to share notes in class if Rory wasn’t available and he respected Austin enough to know to not try anything on Emily Malfoy.

“Emily, I was wondering…do you have a date tomorrow at all?” He smiled sweetly, his sand colored hair was slightly spiked today as he awaited an answer.

“Um…no, not really,” Emily shook her head.

“Care to go with me then?” he seemed so excited and so brave, Emily was flustered as she tried to answer him, when no words came out she simply nodded her head. Ryan grinned, “brilliant, we can walk down together if you’d like.”

                “Sounds perfect,” Emily smiled.

Ryan walked away, heading over to a few friends who had been standing off to the side, they gave him high fives before grabbing a vacant table to sit at.

“That was cute,” Katelyn said beside Emily, making her jump a foot in the air.

“I’m going to get you a bell,” Emily muttered darkly before walking back to her dormitory.

                “Wait!” Katelyn called behind her.

Emily stopped outside the door, Katelyn stood in front of her, leaning forward and studying her silently. Emily was beginning to feel anxious the more Katelyn stared with a calculated look, as if looking for something.

“How’ve you been?” Katelyn asked quietly.

Emily frowned, not knowing what to say. She knew that if she told the truth Katelyn would run right to Austin and tell him everything, but maybe he didn’t care…maybe he wouldn’t care that his little sister was having lags in memory lately. That there were spots of the day she did not remember. Like four days ago, she had been talking to Rory and told him to give a message to Austin when suddenly everything went black. She had no recollection and when she tried to ask Rory he said she passed out and he took her to the infirmary…only, she knew it was a lie because Rory had a tell—his ears turned scarlet and he averted his gaze. He could never lie to Emily.

“Fine, I guess…I’m going to shower,” Emily said with a nod and entered her dormitory for a shower.

Katelyn followed, sitting on Emily’s bed as she walked out of the room, looking around Katelyn quickly dug through Emily’s nightstand. All that was left were empty candy wrappers and a small blue book, Katelyn gently picked up, quickly realizing it was a diary and scanned the pages.
