Emily sat in her empty dorm room, relaxing against her pillow while reading a book from her mother’s store in Hogsmeade. The girls were gone which made Emily smile to herself, the only time they talked to Emily was to ask her about Austin; asking Emily to get them a date with him or one of his friends. After months of this Emily had enough before she finally decided to start avoiding any Ravenclaw girls all together.

Emily had finally gotten to the best part of her book when the door opened and a mass of black hair stuck her head in before walking forward. Emily saw the prefect crest pinned to her chest, the girl smiled before sitting on the bed beside hers.

“Hello. I’m Katelyn,” she introduced herself.

Emily relaxed further into her pillows and returned to her book, “look. You might think your Austin’s type but trust me, he’s not interested,” Emily repeated her line for what felt like the millionth time. When would these people learn? It was just pathetic that they came to her to be set up with her brother, it was like they didn’t know what else to do.

Katelyn let out a small laugh and shook her head, “oh sweetie. If I really wanted your brother I wouldn’t come to you for help. I can get him or anyone else easily on my own.”

Emily looked over her book and studied Katelyn, her face was blemish free and her makeup was perfect—the perfect amount of black eyeliner and mascara that made her eyes pop. And her smile was beautiful, the confidence seemed to roll off her in waves, which could catch any guys attention—even Austin’s.

“What do you want then?” Emily muttered.

“To talk to you,” Katelyn smiled as she put a strand of hair behind her ear.

Emily closed her book and sat up, “if Austin put you up to this just tell me now so I can hex him.”

Katelyn gave a sad smile as her gaze softened, “over the five years you’ve been here. Has no one ever just wanted to talk to you?”

“Either tell me what you want or get out, I have work to do,” Emily muttered darkly as she slammed her book shut.

“Look, I understand why you’re so wary of me, but you really need a friend. And well, since I don’t care who your brother is, I thought you may like my company….you know, as a friend…” Katelyn paused, “but only if you’re up for it.”

Emily placed her book on her nightstand and sat up, she studied Katelyn and saw the determination of her stare. “If this is a trick….I won’t forgive you,” Emily nodded stiffly.

“Funny, I’d never forgive myself either if that were the case,” Katelyn smirked. Emily snorted slightly as Katelyn flipped her hair to the side, “so….care to walk the halls with me? I finished my work for the evening and I can’t think of anything better to do.”

                ***

Katelyn was interesting, it was weird at first—having someone to talk to that was a girl—but after a few days of roving the castle and talking about various things it wasn’t so bad having a girl as a friend. Emily actually thought it was nice to have someone she could run to about any problem, Katelyn sure was an interesting friend.

“I heard there’s going to be a dance for Halloween this year, you thinking of going?” Katelyn mused as they sat eating ice cream outside the picture that led to the kitchens.

“Possibly, but it would be nice to go with a date…” Emily shrugged slightly.

“Then find someone and ask!” Katelyn laughed as she nudged Emily’s shoulder.

Emily was quiet for a moment, there was one person she truly wanted to ask. But it was a pointless dream, he’d never agree to go. As those dazzling blue eyes surfaced her mind Katelyn gave a low whistle.

“Ah, so it’s him.” Katelyn whispered as she nodded her head and turned back to her vanilla and butterscotch ice cream. Emily furrowed her eyebrows and looked at her curiously, “I’m a girl. I have a knack for noticing when someone fancies someone, and you really fancy that Brown guy.”

Emily nodded slightly as she straightened up, “do you know anything about him?”

Katelyn smirked and leaned her head against the wall, “Sebastian Brown...” she mused the name as she scowled at the ceiling of the castle, she was quiet for a while. Not saying a word as she finished her ice cream, “has your brother told you anything about him?”

“Just that he’s a player and not to trust him,” Emily shrugged slightly.

“And yet you still like him?” Katelyn looked at her with a confused look, “do you even know anything about him?” Emily tried to retort but she was lost for words, she shook her head slowly, “Austin wants you to stay away doesn’t he?”

“I have to go to the library, I have an essay due in a few days,” Emily shot up from her spot on the floor and tried to look anywhere but at Katelyn who had a small smirk on her face.

“Have a nice time then,” Katelyn sighed as she stood up as well. Emily gave a curt nod and ran to her common room to grab her things and ran off to the library. She tried not to cry as she walked down the halls, she thought she had Katelyn on her side—thought she was her friend—but she was just another person telling her that Sebastian was the bad guy. That she needed to listen to her big brother. Emily threw her bag on an empty table in the back before scattering everything over it, first it was Austin telling her to stay away, then Rory, and now Katelyn. The only people who stayed away from the topic were Gerard and Mark, they understood not to mess with a girl and the person she fancies.
