Emily woke up in a cold sweat and began to cry, everything was suddenly so clear. All the nights of black outs were now vividly filled and she realized just how right Austin was, she jumped to the shower and turned it on cold. Sitting on the floor and pulling her knees into her chest, she was so horrified of what she did that she ended up vomiting there in the shower. She heaved until nothing came back up, with shaky hands she scrubbed herself raw. How could she do that? How could she hurt Austin like that? Destroy the school and hurt her friends who had only been trying to protect her? She cleaned herself until her skin hurt and was slightly pink.
When she stepped out of the shower, wrapping her towel around her, she wasn’t alone.
“I was told you were vomiting in here,” Katelyn said calmly.
Emily looked at her friend, feeling so guilty for the way she had acted toward her. Without a word Emily sobbed out and wrapped her arms around Katelyn and squeezed tightly. “It’s alright, sweetie. Come on, let’s get you dressed.”
Katelyn guided Emily wordlessly to her clothes and pulled out underwear, jeans, a shirt, and a bra and placed it on Emily’s bed. Emily obediently got dressed and Katelyn took her shoes before taking the girl’s hands and guiding her downstairs and onto the plush couch in front of the fire.
“What happened, Emily?” Katelyn asked quietly.
Emily shook her head, not wanting to talk about it.
“I need you to tell me. I want to help,” Katelyn tried again.
Emily looked at her friend and shivered, “Ryan.” Realizing that she didn’t deserve him, that he needed better than herself. Emily was a horrible person who did horrible things…Ryan was so sweet, that he needed someone who was right for him.
“Ryan doesn’t matter right now, talk to me, Emmie,” Katelyn ordered.
“I…I remember everything…I was so horrible…” Emily whispered, she rocked back and forth, pulling at her wet hair. Katelyn took her hands and shook her head, “no you aren’t. You were just part of a bad thing.”
“I did such horrible things,” Emily spit out. “Ryan…he deserves better…I need—“
“That boy loves you, he knows you went through something horrible, don’t mess that up.” Katelyn shook her head.
Emily nodded slightly and continued to rock. “Aussie…..I need to tell him…”
Katelyn calmed her, taking her into her arms and hugging her tightly. “it’ll be fine. We’ll see him in the morning.” Looking at her watch, Katelyn knew that Austin and Mark would be here shortly. “Come on,” Katelyn pulled Emily up with her and the two stepped out of the portrait hole.
Emily stood hiccupping as she leaned against the wall for support, letting the cold of the stone, sneak into her body. Katelyn could hear them coming, they were talking quietly as they walked up the steps. As soon as Austin’s hair appeared Emily was up and shot like a rocket at her brother and broke down in his arms.
Austin and Mark looked at Katelyn for an explanation as Emily clung to her older brother, crying apologies into his robes.
“She remembers everything,” Katelyn said quietly.
Austin nodded and scooped his sister into her arms and repositioned her so they were sitting on the steps together. “Emily…Em…I need you to stop crying,” Austin said calmly. She continued to mutter words of insults about herself, wiping her eyes as Mark and Katelyn took seats on either side of them. Austin sighed, knowing she wasn’t going to stop, “I know you’re devastated over what you did. I’m devastated I let it get so bad. But you have to stop crying now, everything is fine and it’s not as if you did it on purpose. Please, I forgave you that day after the dance. Now please, just stop alright?”
