As I was on the bus, some girl was seat hopping so she could talk to multiple people at one time. I just knew she had to have failed some grade at least once to still be in ninth grade.
"Hey girl! You ready for the first day?!" she said, almost shouting. I couldn't tell who she was talking to because she had been talking to so many people over the course of a few seconds.
"Hell to the yeah! Gonna get all the boys' eyes, ya know?!"
Oh my gosh. Was that Miranda talking to that girl? I was already beginning to think she didn't want to be associated with me considering that she said we should sit in seats to ourselves but across from each other so we could talk. We hadn't been talking..
"Oh yeah! I'll have to tell you all about this bet I have going on!"
"Girl! You better spill!"
"I will later. Gotta be sure no one hears, and it gets back to the wrong people, ya know?"
"Yeah... Hey, just sit with me! No one will listen in if you're sitting with someone. Plus we're girls! No guys want to listen in on girl talk!"
"True! Alright." She tossed her one-strap book bag under Miranda's seat. When she stood up, I realized how tall she was! She was about 6 feet. I was only 5'7". She had wavy dirty-blond hair that fell a little past her shoulders. She wore a green short-sleeve graphic tee with faded skinny jeans and flip flops. Errrr. Should've wore the graphic tee! Her long silver chain that matched her earrings made her look complete.
"So tell me! What's the bet?" Miranda asked eagerly.
"Well, it's really cool! You are gonna think it's awesome! My cousin Derrick-"
"Wait! Wait! Is that the hot one in college?"
"Yeah, yeah. We started talking about first times and stuff, yeah?"
"Uh..no? First time at what?"
"Sex! Duh! And I'm the blond one! Ha!"
"Oh yeah.. Of course!" She sounded uneasy, and let out a forced laugh. I was beginning to feel awkward too. What the heck was this freak talking about?!
"Anyway the bet is that I can't get laid during my first week of 11th grade. Get it? My first time will be my first week of this school year!" She said it like the bet was if she could get a new friend! Wow! Of course, she wasn't in ninth! Why did I automatically assume she was in my grade? Any way, I was kind of glad she wasn't in my grade! She sounded like a lunatic. What girl used the word 'laid'??
"I don't know about that, Brittany. Uh.. I know it's your cousin and a bet and everything, but that doesn't mean you have to do it!!"
"Have to? I want to! Sounds like fun. Wanna be in on it? Like two for two?"
"Uh..nah. That's okay, Brit."
"Alright! Suit yourself!"
"That actually sounds like kind of... dangerous. Don't cha think?"
"Dangerous?? What do you mean?"
"You could STI's or get pregnant! I mean do you really want your first time to be with somebody be just for a bet?"
"Okay, I get what you're saying, but what's an STI or whatever you said?"
"You know, like an STD, but now they are called STI for infection."
"Oh...nah I didn't know that, but thanks for the health lesson!" she laughed. Noticing the look on Miranda's face, she tried to ease it by saying,
"Don't worry! I'll call off the bet if it's that big of a concern for you! Besides, you're right about the first time not being special if it's a bet."
"Thanks, Brittany! I mean really! I thought you were going overboard for a second there!"
"Uh..yeah. Alright I'm gonna move back to my seat now. Catch ya later." she said as she moved her backpack then slowly stood up and moved two seats back.
"Alright! See ya."
Okay, I couldn't take it any more!
"Who was that?" I leaned over and asked Miranda.
"Oh Brittany Greens! I've known her for a while. I met her at a friend's party."
Friend's party? I never heard her talk about that. And why didn't she tell me about it! I mean I wouldn't expect a full invite, but mentioning it would have been good. Thanks, Miranda!
"Oh..."
"Yeah."
"What'd she say?"
"Oh nothing much..just school talk mostly."
"Oh.. okay. You'll have to introduce me." I said, trying to be nice but not meaning it.
"Yeah, sure."
What was up with that, Miranda? Now you were lying to me! Awesome! What an awesome day of school! I know you weren't gonna give away her "bet", but you really had to bold-face lie? Thanks again, Miranda! Really! Thanks for getting my first day of high school, the "big day", off to a sucky start! What a great friend! Lying over a friggin' freak!
I didn't really feel like talking to Miranda. Plus, all she seemed to want to do was text and listen to music, but most people listened to music any way. I was even listening to music from my iPhone. I had got it for my birthday over the summer.
"Hey, sure are lookin' fancy with that iPhone!" someone said happily, leaning over the back of the seat in front of me.
I slowly looked up, wondering who was standing, or sitting, over me. I found that it was my friend Natasha. She had her chin laying on her crossed arms on the top of the seat, her brown hair, like mine, was pulled up in a ponytail.
"Oh, hey! I didn't know who it was at first! I'm glad it was you! Come sit with me. Haven't seen you in a while!" It felt good to see a friendly, warm, inviting person. She moved back into my seat, making me sit on the inside. Ugh, but at least I had someone to talk to and catch up with. Besides, I loved talking with Natasha. She was Natasha Coleman! Always known as the funny one.
"So, what's up my girl?"
