Chapter 22 - Lutar Ou Morrer (Fight Or Die)

If you were walking through a rough area of London or Liverpool in England at 8.45pm at night you'd be a little on edge, keeping your head down, not making eye contact with anyone, aiming to get to your destination as quickly as possible. So if you were in Brazil, in the large city of Rio De Janeiro, in the largest favela constituency of Rochina, with no clue of where you are going, with barely any belongings besides a few bags (I'd left my crutches at the airport, we'd paid someone to keep them until we came back), looking like a bunch of tourist's who want to be killed, you should be seriously worried.

"I don't like this" Arii whispered, "I feel like I'm in a horror film and at any moment someone's going to come around the corner with a knife"

"I'm the friend that screams like a girl" Noah said, trying to lighten the mood. Just then a gang appeared from nowhere and headed towards us, "Oh crap"

"Stay behind me" I said, this time, no one argued, apart from Tayte who stood by my side, the gang approached and looked us all up and down, saying some things in Portuguese, "Start walking" I said calmly, in which everyone did so. The gang consisted of 5 men, all tattooed up and looking like they were about to knife us all, just as we'd walked past, one stopped and began to say something in Portuguese.

Now let's get this straight, there are things that you don't know about me. I'm not going to go into detail now, but one thing is that I can speak a few languages, Portuguese being one of them and not many people knew this, and I don't even think Tayte or Noah knew this. When I was getting ready to join the army, I decided to learn a few languages to put me in good stead for the future.

"Eu não quero nenhum problema. Eu só preciso de uma arma, você sabe onde eu posso obter um?" (I don't want any trouble. I just need a gun, do you know where I can get one from?)

"O que você menino branco precisa de uma arma para?" (What do you white boy need a gun for?)

"Preciso proteger minha família. Estamos sendo caçados pela polícia. Vamos conhecer Ricardo Caesar" (I need to protect my family. We're being hunted by the police. We're going to meet Ricardo Caesar)

During this conversation, everyone was watching me intently; I had some explaining to do.

"Ricardo Caesar?" the leader of the gang I'm come to the conclusion said,

"Sim"

"Venha comigo, eu acho que posso conseguir o que você precisa. Eles ficam lá com os meus rapazes, para a proteção" (Come with me, I think I can get what you need. They stay there with my guys, for protection), I agreed,

"I'll be back; they're going to keep an eye on you. I'll be okay, I promise" I said,

"Keane" Tayte said,

"I'll be fine"

"When the hell did you learn to speak Portuguese?" Noah asked, "Because I didn't know you could and neither did Tayte, so that's saying a lot, what else are you keeping under wraps and what did they tell you?"

"I thought it would be good to learn a few languages for the army, except I never enrolled"

"What else can you speak?" Arii asked, as Tayte looked sadly at me,
