Chapter Sixteen

I made a pit stop in the towns shops and 'borrowed' a dress. I removed my armor once again and attempted to detangle my hair. Motioning for Naia to remain where she was. "You'll need to follow me, my brothers don't know I have you and if they did this whole thing would be over." She nodded and laid down in the moss and grass. Then I ran towards the camp, I'd forgotten how hard it was to run in dresses. I raced into the camp, pushing threw the warriors who moved aside for me in confusion. I raced up to the guards pretending to be disheveled and confused. The guard held his hand out and stopped me from getting any closer. "Please, Sir. I am looking for Sivmit and Ivian... They are my brothers. My mother is very Ill! I need to find them, it is her dying wish to see them!" I cried, fake tears slipped down my cheeks. The guard winced slightly but turned to his companion and whispered something. The other one nodded then walked off. "He is going to get the Commander, he will find your brothers for you ma'am. Why don't you sit down."

I nodded and sat down on the wooden steps outside the palace doors. I sat there quietly, twiddling with my thumbs. They would be furious with me when they got home and mother was perfectly fine. Suddenly the doors where thrown open behind me and I skittered sideways three guards where dragging a body with a black hood. Followed by the king and the prince. I watched the prince sweep past me, our eyes met for half a second and I bowed my head as a show of respect. When I looked back up he had looked forward again. They dragged the body towards the center of the camp, the king held his sword towards the mans neck. "This man is to be executed for treason against the crown." The king shouted across the crowd. I stared, as the black sack was removed from the mans head. Fehanaro! I almost shouted as the humans face was exposed. Blood rolled down his face and lips. He had been savagely beaten.

"Not once, but twice. Did you help the fugitive Ivian Rath escape." I felt my spit stick in the back of my throat. He hadn't been anywhere near me since the lake incidence. "First, you attempted to help him to run. Then you HID him from us. So, you will die in his place." The commander was coming around the corner as I grabbed the guardsmans bow from his back and a single silver arrow. Time slowed as the sword swung towards the humans neck. I unleashed the arrow towards the silver blade, the arrow hit the sword and knocked it from the kings hand before he could kill the man. The crowd had gathered around me to see what was happening and he screamed into the sea of people. "Who fired that arrow!" he demanded. I ran forward dropping the bow before the guard would notice. I shoved my way threw the crowd as the commander went to the king followed by my brothers who had a confused and worried expression on their face. I burst into the circle, my brothers gazes falling onto me. They raced over. "Ireth!" Sivmit cried as he wrapped his arms around me. "Its great to see you, but what are you doing here." I didn't say anything because my gaze was locked onto Fehanaros. He somehow must have known that I saved him. "Mother. Is ill, we need to go." I said. As Ivians eyes followed mine to meet Fehanaros. Ivian moved towards the man and lifted him to his feet. "This man will be put under trial with the Eagle riders, he is one of us after all." Ivian said- -as my father's first son he had the most authority with the Eagle riders- The king scowled. "This is my charg-" my brother cut him off. "You don't want to loose us riders as allies my league. Trust me." He whistled and three birds appeared. Ivian nodded to Sivmit who helped the injured human onto the back of his own bird. I sat behind the eldest twin.

He said nothing to me as we took off leaving the crowd down below us. I clung to my brothers armor, I wasn't used to the speed of the larger eagles. "Mother is Ill?" he asked me. I nodded slowly. "Yeah..." I trailed off, his eyes turned towards me. Blue and filled with suspicion. They can be angry with me all they want but, I just saved their lives. I looked around and saw Naia following low behind us. She was barely visible threw the treetops. Sivmit moved closer to us. Fehanaro was still staring at me, confusion and wonder in his green eyes. "How did you get here?" Sivmit asked. "I took a carriage and borrowed a horse." I lied.

We had been flying for a good three hours before we had to stop to rest. The eagles hopped off to find fish at a near by stream. I wrapped my feet close to my chest. Moonhigh was closing in and the guilt of fleeing was growing. I knew that pretty soon the Orcs would burst from the ground and kill everyone. Atleast I had managed to save my brothers. "Say.' I asked. "Did you meet anyone interesting?" I asked Ivian. Who grunted and shrugged his shoulders. "One. A man by the name of Iviaan Rath, he showed up the kings son multiple times but he was sent off to an Orc nest when he stabbed the prince. Poor sod, hes defiantly dead."

I sighed. "Ah, poor guy. To bad royalty thinks they are so important." Ivian nodded, but he kept watching me. Ivian had always been incredible at detecting lies. So I did my best to not look into his eyes. "I'm going to get some berrys or something." I said, leaving swiftly. In truth I was going to find berries AND find Naia. I found her about eighty yards from the camp. She jumped down and greeted me with a coo. "Lets see if we can see the march. Tovella said it was underground but I'm sure there is evidence." I whispered. Jumping onto the birds back and soring into the air. Climbing high into the midnight air. We sored just below the clouds. From here I could see a single bright light, that must have been them. They where on schedule- but still fairly far from the palace. Naia landed and I dismounted, returning to camp with handfuls of berries. "Yo. Found some." I said. Sitting down with the twins. Handing some to Ivian and then to Sivmit.

"Did you get a eagle in the time we where gone?" Sivmit asked. I shook my head. "No, dummy otherwise I would have road them here." Fehanaro had said nothing the entire time, he sat in silence using one of the eagles as a rest gazing wide eyed into the fire. I turn towards the twins and the man. "Are you sure nothing was going to happen..." Sivmit shrugged. "No, nothing we heard of." I nodded So the king didn't tell them, poor saps. They'll all be dead by morning. I felt a pang of guilt as I thought of all the burning bodies that would litter the palace grounds in the morning. "We should get going." I said, standing up and helping the youngest twin to his feet. "I'm sure you can go back once you see mother... Ive already spoken to the healers they said that she was likely to live but she still wanted to see you..." I trailed off. My eyes falling to the ground. I hated lying, but I had to protect them from what was to come. I couldn't let them die for people I didn't know. Ivian eyed me but nodded and mounted his Eagle, I followed. Sivmit helped Fehanaro onto his own and we took off. I looked behind me and I could see the palace, glowing against the moonlight. I could almost feel the souls of thousands that would die.

I ripped my eyes from the building, I had to try to ignore the numbing sensation in my lower stomach. This was no longer my fight. But you wanted this A voice in my head whispered You wanted to prove yourself, to show your family that you are worthy. Running now will only prove they where right. "Fucking shit." I hissed. I'm right, I cant run... not now.

Not ever.
