Chapter five

A strange man arrived in our village early the next morning. The crowd gathered below, there noises awaking me from my deep sleep. I staggered from my warm bed and threw a log on the fire then pulled my clothes over my body and wandered outside down the path towards the gathering crowd. A man, dressed in very fancy armor pasted a piece of paper on pillar of the main building in the town. The mayor's home, accept he rarely came out of there and it was more so often used to old religious gatherings. The man was obviously dressed in elven armor, gold and glittering in the sunlight. I pushed threw the crowd to view the paper. It read. “Join the fight against the Orcs, all men welcome in Sindar for training before war.” I wrinkled my nose. How cheesy, and why just men? I was equally as good as fighting if not better than my brothers. Irivan shoved his way up next to me. “Ah, a elven war? Looking for human recruits I assume.” He muttered. “The riders.” Replied the armored man who hadn’t moved from where he stood. Irivan raised an eyebrow. “Then I will fly to Sindar at dawn.” He turned his head to look over the crowd. “And I trust our other strong men will join as well!” He  roared as I slunk out of the way.

This was just unfair, my brother had a eagle companion. He got to go see Sindar and fight in a war, while I was here! I  snuck away from the crowd and towards the nesting stable. The little eagle I had seen before greeted me with a squeak.  Fluffing her feathers and nipping at my fur boots. “Hay little one.” I whispered. She flickered her tail feathers at me and squawked quietly. “I wonder if anyone claimed you yet, your so cute.” I stroked my hand across her face the bird chirped quietly and nibbled at my fur jacket then my auburn hair. “I'll take that as a no.” her white face markings reflected against her dark colors like a ray of sunlight threw the fog. There was a stomp behind me and I turned my head quickly. The villagers where starting to depart. Woman cried and tried to stop there husbands from leaving, but the glory of battle called each of us. I hid behind a corner of one of the nests as my brothers mounted there eagles. Wishing a goodbye to my mother before vanishing into the skys along with a considerable amount of the male population of the village.

Some stayed behind of course, but mostly the ones to young to hold a sword or the ones to old to wear armor. I watched them vanish into the clouds and from my sight. My mother spotted me and wandered over . “Ireth, darling.” She began as I glared into the sky like I might jump up and cut the clouds in half. I sighed. “I don’t know why the world has to be so wrong to me sometimes.” I muttered quietly. She touched my shoulder. “Its better you stay here, you can supply the village with furs and food for winter. I don’t need all my children running off.” She said. I touched her warm hand with my gloved one. “Yeah…” but I didn’t feel  like  I was honored with the protection of our people. The little eagle that had taken a liking to me squawked at me and trailed me out of the nesting area. I chuckled. “Little one, you cant come with me.” Surprisingly enough, she was bigger then I had first noticed. Almost riding size, almost. Perhaps a few days before she could be put into the choosing. Me, in my twentys alongside the fifteen year olds who where supposed  to get them. While deep in thought I hadn’t noticed the on coming shape that smacked me backwards and next to the large eagle that screeched in surprise as I landed on her foot. “What the hell!” I snarled dragging myself out of the mud and bird feathers.

The man I had seen before stopped running and grabbed my arm. “So sorry!” he stuttered, attempting to wipe the mud from my clothes. I shooed him with my hand. “Its fine.” I grumbled quietly as the little eagle snarled and clacked her beak. The brown haired man smiled at me. “She likes you.” I shrugged. “I guess.” The bird ruffled her feathers and moved around me looking up at the boy. He smiled and ran his hand across her head. “Good girl.” She blinked her large black eyes then turned away. “You don’t have a companion yet, do you?” he asked me. I shrugged. “No I-“ I began but he started talking midsentence. “She is the hatchling of my- Maja and Irivans eagle.” He said. I blinked. “My brother?” Fahnaro raised an eyebrow before realization sparked in his eyes he snapped his fingers. “Oh! Duh, I knew he had a brother and a sister but I'd never seen her with them…” he trailed off, I guess I was giving him a dark look because he quickly said goodbye and shyed off. I turned to look down at the bird that was nibbling at one of the tassels off my fur jacket.  My mom had always made such things for us, she liked to decorate. Rather then just boring old furs. “I should probably give you a name if your going to follow me around.” I knelt down to pet the creature with crackled in reply. “Naia.” I said. She wiggled her tail and squawked in reply.

“Naia.”
