Chapter 31
Cheryl’s POV
A few weeks had passed since my trip to L.A and things had gone back to normal.
I was still working in various clubs during the week and Kimberley had been busy with school.
Unfortunately she didn’t manage to get a leading role in the last school play, and even though she didn’t really say anything about it I knew she was disappointed.
Maybe even more so in herself.
So I did what I should do: I took her out, brought extra candy home and told her I knew she would get it next time.
She smiled when I said that, with that cute smile that still makes me want to jump forward and cuddle her to death.
But she didn’t say what she thought, what we both knew.
That my work, perhaps even our relationship had caused her to hold back on what she loved to do most.
She’s probably the most ambitious person I know, always thriving to do her very best but also dedicated to pleasing everyone around her.
Two things that don’t go together at times.
And realising that she picked me, made me promise myself that I’d find a way for our relationship and our careers to go together.
I’m still not sure how exactly I’m going to do that but we’ll get there.
Kimberley seems to be lost in thoughts as well when I walk towards her, her eyes resting on something that she’s holding.
A soft smile on her lips when I move my arm around her back, placing a kiss on her cheek before looking at the object.
‘It seems silly to buy them a gift. They already have so much stuff and this will probably end up somewhere in a box, if it isn’t the trashcan. Do we really have to bring something?’
I tap the wooden head of what seems to be an African statue, concluding that I would probably skip the box but then again, I’m not Kimberley’s parents.
‘We could just bring some wine? I don’t know babe they’re your parents.’
She sighs loudly whilst putting the thing back.
‘Nah, they have a filled wine cellar. My mum collects them.’
‘Oh…’
Following her out of the store I take an extra step to walk right next to her, moving my hand to take a hold of hers whilst trying to think of a gift.
It’s funny how presents are sometimes such a pain to buy, and it’s not even their anniversary of birthday yet.
Maybe it’s more like a ‘coming home’ gift, presented by the long lost daughter who finally found her way back with her head hung in shame.
Because that’s how it is really.
Her parents didn’t invite her over for a family reunion even though it’s been more than half a year since they last saw their daughter.
I don’t get it to be honest, how they could ignore her like that, seclude her from the family.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t even know how my dad looks but that’s different.
They raised her, they know her.
How could anyone be so cold only because someone so lovely and kind choses to follow a dream?
