Incubus' POV
The wait was so long. So many souls, so many opportunities to damn them all. But, I couldn't do it. Not because I didn't want to - because I really wanted to - but because I was standing behind like, twenty people, in line for a free large coffee and had my human blue eyes set on the cashier who glanced up at me every ten seconds and quickly, shyly looked away when she saw me staring back. And the best part was, she was baptized.
I saw her glance up at me quickly as she wrote something on a piece of paper for the old lady who ordered. She smiled with nervousness as I winked at her, her cheeks flooding with a shade of pink. I could hear her erratic, irregular breathing from all the way where I stood, and internally grinned at myself. What to do...what to do with her? I thought. There were so many possibilities for me this morning.
"This is going to be a good day." I muttered to myself as the line moved forward one person.
"What?" The man in front of me questioned as he turned to look over his shoulder at me. "Did ya say something, kid?"
"No." I replied, a ghost of a evil smile on my face from my bad, bad thoughts. Why did I feel so giddy? Was it because I was having so much fun anticipating what I would do with the good (well, not really considering she was checking out the Prince of Hell) Christian girl? Maybe.
"Oh. Okay." The man replied lamely, and turned back to the front of the line. I had just returned my distracted gaze to the adorable bottle-blonde at the register before I whipped my sight back to the man who stood in front of me. I knew him from somewhere. And no, he wasn't just some human I tortured at night. He was...he had been part of my crazy cult.
From way back in the first book.
I remembered him as the 'officer' who 'helped out so much'. What a eager soul that had possessed him. And now look at him...I thought with annoyance as I stared with an upturned nose at his back. He was so...good. I could feel it coming off of him in waves. I bet he was one of those 'protect and serve' guys who took all their jobs seriously.
I wanted to murder him.
"Next." The shy blonde said as the line moved forward again. I took a dismissive step forward as I continued to stare intently at the man's back. He was wearing the uniform, he had the same bald spot on his head, and he had the same face. Yet, something - besides the fact that none of my minions was possessing him - he was completely different. I wonder what it was.
"You want to bud me?" He suddenly turned around and asked me, catching me as I stared at him. I blinked and took a step past him, looking over my shoulder dismissively. I crossed my arms across my chest and tapped my foot as I stared at the girl at the register again. She was talking to one of her coworkers and was distracted. And so was I. While I stared at her, I thought of the man behind me.
"Um...sorry everyone!" Another girl that worked behind the counter yelled. Everyone stopped speaking and turned to look at her. "There's...a situation, and we need you all to exit! Sorry folks!"
With a chorus of groans from those of us who waited so long and still didn't get anything, people all around the shop began to exit. Sighing contentedly, I turned away and made my way to the door as well. What type of situation? What the hell type of problems does a tiny cafe even have? Did they run out of coffee? Find out that someone had stolen all their bagels?
