I had to admit that as I got to my locker at school the next day, I was nervous. Incredibly nervous. I mean I wanted Alex to keep the promise, and I did believe her. But what if she didn't? She was a different person around her friends and I didn't understand it. I wished that she'd have better friends. I felt bad for thinking it, as she should be friends with who she wants. But I'd feel better if she was friends with people who at least didn't mind me, even if our relationship was entirely a secret. I took out the books that I needed and put them into my bag. I heard footsteps heading in the direction of my locker and turned around to see Alex walking towards me.
"Hi Alex." I said, feeling my heard beat faster and faster. She smiled at me, a genuine smile, not the fake smile that she always gives me when she's with people.
"Oh hey." Alex said, getting her keys out of her pocket.
"Am I coming over to tutor you tonight?" I asked, and she smiled and nodded at me.
"Of course." She said, getting some books out of her locker.
"Well I'll see you then." I said.
"I can't wait." She said, nodding and waving at me as I walked away, and went to my form room. I was happy, but this still didn't mean much. We'd pretty much been alone, who knows how she would treat me with other people around, what she would say to them about me. I shouldn't doubt her, but I just had a bad feeling. What if she laughed at me again?
It was a pretty slow day until I had English that afternoon. I paid attention in my lessons, pretty much, but I found myself clock watching. It was driving me crazy.
Finally the afternoon came, and I smiled at Alex when I saw her and she smiled at me. It wasn't off to a bad start. We had essays to hand in so the teacher came round collecting them. When she got to Calum she stopped.
"See miss I did the homework on this piece of paper but I did it in invisible ink so you can't read it. You could buy a special light for it but they're really expensive so I wouldn't even bother, I'd just give me my A* on the spot, I promise you it's the best essay you'd ever read." Calum said, and Mrs Newman couldn't even try to hide a smile. Everyone was laughing.
"Have it on my desk tomorrow morning." She said, shaking her head and walking away. Calum winked at me and I giggled. Only he could get away with that.
All the way through the lesson everything pretty much just went well, there were no hiccups. Alex and I didn't have much reason to talk because everyone was doing their own work; we were practising how to answer exam questions for when we had our mock exams in a month. I was already getting scared for them! At the end of the lesson everyone stood up and starting packing their things away. Alex left with her friend and I was quick to follow behind them and see what they would say.
"I hate doing those questions, they're so boring!" Amber groaned, and Alex nodded.
"So do I but it's better than the essays." Alex said, and I was waiting to see if anything would be said about me.
"That's so true, the essays are hell. I can't wait to drop English." Amber said.
"Me neither." Alex said, laughing. She was going to take drama next year; she was good at that kind of thing.
"At least I sit next to a fairly normal person. I feel so bad for you sat next to that freak show!" Amber said. Yep, there it was.
"She's not a freak show, she's quite nice actually." Alex said, and Amber raised her eyes.
"Maybe you're the freak show instead!" She said, but she laughed. I had a small smile on my face; Alex had kept her promise to me.
"Hey, that was lucky in English." Calum said, catching up with me and smiling as I was walking out of the gates.
