Verity King

The game was really quite exciting, Luna thought. Ravenclaw played very well, but Gryffindor had been the better team ever since Harry had joined in his first year. Luna never tried to kid herself into believing what wasn't true.

"..And Chaser Ginny Weasley takes the Quaffle, zigzagging down the field like a maniac- dodges two Bludgers- shoots- scores! So that's 10-0 for Gryffindor- Ravenclaw in possession, Fletchely about to score- misses- and Harry Potter still circling for the Snitch- Gryffindor in possession, Ginny Weasley scores again, so it's 20-0 for Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw does NOT look happy..."

Luna glanced behind her as she heard a loud groan. Jason was shaking his head, looking sour. His girlfriend, Piper, was trying to comfort him and watch at the same time, but Jason kept pushing her away. Finally, she snapped.

"What is up with you, Jason Grace?" she yelled. "Stop acting like a child denied sweets, and stop shoving your girlfriend! You should be ashamed of yourself!"

Luna peered at Piper's face, expecting to see the hurt which was always apparent when she scolded Jason, but she saw nothing but anger there.

Jason's reaction was minimal; he only grunted and told Piper to "pipe down."

Piper slapped him hard across the face and then stalked away to sit with Hazel, two rows above. Luna shrugged, but before she could turn back around, she noticed Jason looking at her in a way that she didn't like at all, one that made her shudder.

"And it's fifty-nil to Gryffindor- Ravenclaw captain Nicholas Fleming warming up for a score- it's in! Fifty-ten to Gryffindor."

Luna leaned forwards as Harry spotted something. She could tell he had- he'd tensed for a dive. Then he was off, plummeting towards the ground. Luna knew the match was Gryffindor's, then, because Harry never missed a catch. He'd never failed to capture the Snitch.

As the sea of red and gold stood, captivated, to watch, Harry pulled out of the dive, triumphant and happy.

"GRYFFINDOR WINS!"

Luna cheered along with everyone else, for she was nothing if not a loyal friend. Then she stepped lightly down from her seat and made her way to the bottom of the stands, waving goodbye to Nico. She walked away from the Pitch, arms swinging and a smile on her face. She didn't really care who won. Spotting the tree that she and Nico had sat under only a half an hour ago, she stopped to look at it with nostalgic fervor, not spotting the boy who seemed to be following her at a distance.

Luna kept walking, up the wide front steps of Hogwarts. But when she got to the doors, they were locked.

Oh, well, she thought, I'll just wait for a professor to come and unlock it.

And she sat down on the top step.

Out of the distance now appeared a lone figure, looking dejected and angry. Luna recognized him as Jason Grace, Piper's boyfriend, whom Piper had slapped during the match. He approached the steps; as he got nearer, his eyes seemed to rove Luna's face.

"Hey," he said, smiling charmingly at her.

Luna's expression was one of stony disapproval. How dare he try to flirt with her? He had a girlfriend.

"Horrid match," he continued, coming up the lower steps in two bounds and standing before her. Luna now felt a little anxious, as if something bad was about to happen.

"I thought it was exciting," she informed him, standing so that she could look him in the eye.

He looked dejected again. "Maybe. But now I owe Leo ten galleons."

Luna felt a little sorry for him, now, because losing to a friend was never a very palatable experience if one hadn't other sources of happiness, like Luna had. She put a hand on his arm. "It could have been twenty galleons, you know. You're lucky it wasn't."

"Uh-huh," he said, not seeming to pay any attention anymore. His eyes continued to rove her face, then locked on her mouth. Luna felt a little more nervous, now. She had to get away- and fast.

"Well," she said, edging away a little, "I must be-"

He grabbed her waist and kissed her. It was not a friendly kiss.

"Stop," she said, trying to remove his hands from her waist. "I don't want-"

He kissed her again, and this time he grabbed her head from behind so she couldn't pull away. Luna struggled for breath. "Stop, d'you have nargles in your-" she said as soon as he pulled away, but he only kissed her again, and harder. Luna was terrified, now. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't get away- Nico, she thought, please come!

Suddenly a punch hit the side of Jason's head, and he let go of Luna, sliding to the steps. Luna saw Piper hurrying away in blatant tears, and Nico in front of her.

Luna began to cry- she hadn't cried ever since her mum died. She hugged Nico, crying into his shoulder.

Finally, she regained control of herself. "Thank you," she told him.

He shuffled his feet and kicked the unconscious Jason as if to soothe his feelings. "You're welcome."

"That was nice of you," Luna told him, "to do that for Piper."

"Piper?" he asked.

"That was who you punched Jason for, right?"

Nico kicked Jason again. "Um," he said helpfully.

Luna lifted her eyebrows.

"Well," Nico said finally, "I did do it for Piper, sort of- but mostly," he continued, "I did it for you."

Luna looked at him, surprised. "Really? Why?"

"Well, aside from the fact that you were being kissed against your will," he said, looking back down at his feet and kicking Jason again, "I like you."

Luna smiled a little. "Well, um, I like you too, Nico. You're a good friend."

He turned even redder. "No, he said, looking up at her, "I mean I fancy you. Curse British vocabulary."

Luna smiled. "That's a coincidence," she told him, "because I fancy you too."

He looked up at her, shocked. "Really?"

She laughed. "Of course, you dolt."

Nico looked down at Jason. "Was that, um- was that your first kiss?"

"Of course not," she told him. "It doesn't really count. I haven't had my first kiss at all."

He laughed and kissed her nose. "Well," he told her, "now you have."

And holding hands, they walked back to meet their friends, who were coming back from the match.
