Nico stomped away from the Quidditch Pitch and across the school grounds, feeling confused and infuriated. He hated air. He'd always hated it, but now he hated it a thousand times more, remembering Zephyrus, the West Wind.
He tapped one of the giant doors to the school, and they both immediately swung open.
He made his way up the stairs to the Gryffindor dormitory, not really paying attention to where his feet were leading him. He was still thinking back on his earlier memories from two years ago backwards. They had all come painfully tumbling back at his disillusion in regards to Will.
Percy, Will...
Who was next on the list of painful memories?
Nico's thoughts were interrupted in the form of a small, slight girl that he collided with rather heavily. He swayed a little, but remained on his feet. Looking around, he realized that he wasn't in a part of the school that he recognized.
And looking down, he saw a person on the ground that he likewise didn't recognize.
"Hello," the girl said brightly, waving away the hand he outstretched and jumping to her feet lightly.
She surveyed him with wide blue eyes that were fringed with sooty black, fernlike lashes.
"Hey," he said, reaching one hand out to shake. She took it, still looking curiously at him- her hands were small and her skin was like soft silk on a winter day. She didn't reply, but he wasn't offended, somehow.
Her gaze didn't make him flinch like most people's did. Even Will's look had been probing and calculating and had made Nico feel undersized and scrawny.
He realized that there wasn't any judgement in this girl's face at all. There was only acceptance. He got the feeling that she loved everyone and everything in the world. She made him feel easy- comfortable.
He looked more closely at her, feeling more interested in her than he'd felt in any girl he'd ever met. Her hair was long and pretty, swinging down her back in a sheet of ringlets like living gold. The top of her head was about level with his nose. Her figure was slim and light. Overall, she reminded him of a fairy- even the radish earrings that hung from her ears and her cork necklace were oddly attractive against her pale, delicate skin tone.
Whoa.
What was going on?
You're gay, Nico growled to himself. And you've only known this girl for about a minute. Stop acting like an idiot.
But Nico had never considered the possibility of bisexuality, probably because he'd always liked guys- and because he'd never thought about it.
He shrugged to himself internally.
"I'm Luna," the pixie told him, and he felt as if he'd passed a test. "Luna Lovegood."
What was it with that British way of introducing oneself?
"Nico," he said. "I'm Nico DiAngelo."
Darn.
"I know who you are," Luna said. "I've seen you in the hallways. You were sad about something."
Whoa. She was smart.
"It's because somebody told you they didn't like you," she continued.
Double whoa. "How did you know that?"
"You looked like you'd lost something," she said. Her face was serious. "And now you look like you've found it. Or you almost have."
Nico looked at his watch. It said 1:30. Classes would start soon, and he needed to get his Defense Against the Dark Arts textbook.
"Someday," he told Luna, "you'll tell me what that means. But I have to go now."
She smiled, and her face seemed to light up from within.
She's like a rainbow, he thought. Unique, but more beautiful and wonderful than anything else in the world.
"Well," he said after a moment, "see you."
She nodded. "Cheerio."
"What?"
She laughed. It was a tinkling sound, like bells. "Goodbye, Nico DiAngelo."
"Bye, Luna Lovegood."
Nico walked away, feeling as full of light and beauty as Luna herself was.
What's going on? he asked himself.
But when he tried to find the answer, Nico found he didn't even care what it was.
For the first time in his life, he was really in love.
Because love? It wasn't supposed to be about fear, or nervousness, or regret.
It was the best feeling in the world, and it was about moving forward. Now Nico knew what "love at first sight" meant.
Author's note: I've started posting pictures w/ my chapters again, as you can see. The girl at the top is Luna Lovegood, the one and only.
