Chapter 64

Max POV

Blast From The Past

“Maxwell, are all guys douchebags?” ask Mel as I walk up, taking a spot beside her as we laid down in front of trees, starring up at the grey rain filled clouds.

“I don’t know Mel, I can’t say yes because I’m not one, at least I think I'm not, but a majority of them are pretty douchy.” I say.

Sitting here, laying down, looking at the sky was something me and Mel did after she moved in after her father passed. We would always race to the top of the tallest tree in my backyard then lay in the middle of the grass just talking about any and everything that came to our mind, that or Mel would just come out here to watch the sunrise or the stars sparkle at night, I found out after a while she only did that when something was upsetting her and she didn’t want to bother me. That was one of the great things about L.A, the huge houses around had amazing backyards, some that even run into the local forest. And with today’s conversation starting, Today’s topic was: Guys.

“Are you still dating that Trev guy?” I ask.

“No, and I wouldn’t call that dating.”

“Why not? Didn’t he take you to grab milkshakes Friday?”

Mel laughs, “Since when are you stuck in the 70s? Nobody gets milkshakes anymore. It’s all about Starbucks and Java juice.”

I laugh, “I think you mean Jamba Juice.”

“Whatever you know what I meant.”

Still laughing I say, “But didn’t you tell him that you love milkshake’s?”

“He didn’t ask, I literally got in the car and he drove straight there, as he talked nonstop about him being sex deprived. I ended up ‘going to’ the bathroom and walking back here.”

“Yeah that sounds like Trev.” I say as we look back up at the sky as we watch the grey clouds continue to blow in.

With Mel’s mother and father both passed away, and my mother dying in a car accident, and my father unknown, Mel was my only family. She was my sister, my best friend, my partner in crime. Being raised in the hell hole that she was brought up in after her dad passed, I swore to never let anyone hurt her. Girls hated how close we were, many thought we were hooking up. Teenage boy, living with teenage girl, by themselves? Sure did stir up a lot of trouble in gossip.

And dealing with one of the most talked about high schools in Hollywood, word got around fast. With Mel being so much shorter and having to have gone through as much as she did, I was surprised that she even woke up and got out of the bed some mornings. Let alone be able to wear an authentic smile, but looking over at Mel with her eyes closed, nostril flared, as she took in the rain scented air. Mel smile was something special, it made me happy to see her happy. Being her big brother and best friend I wanted nothing more than for her to be happy.

So placing my hands behind my head I took a breath as I say, “So what’s with the special sky watching today? You know it’s about to rain right?”

Mel nods, “I know. I just needed time to calm down.”

“Calm down? What happened?” I ask turning my head sideways in her direction.
