Two days ago, I received a call from Sean Rossmen.
Two days ago, I got a job at Buzzfeed.
My first thought was, what? Because, to be honest, I was completely unprepared. I came to say that I didn't want the job, and look what happens? I become a Junior Video Producer. Having the chance to meet the staff that I know and love would be wonderful, of course, but I don't want to be apart of the staff. Not by a long shot.
I want to die. I want to roll up into a little ball, dig myself a hole, sit inside that hole, and just die. Buzzfeed might not sound horrible to you, but trust me, I know all about it. The only people I've met so far are Quinta and Eugene, excluding Sara and Ashly (since I knew them beforehand). With my knowledge, I have enough sense to tell that Eugene's a total flirt.
So, here I was, internally crying as I got dressed for the day. Today would be my first day, which would most likely be basic training. I really, REALLY don't want to do this. I want to go to my little cash register at Starbucks and sit inside the cozy cafe, making coffee for hipsters and middle-aged caffeine addicts, while I steal cake pops from the counter during my breaks.
Why am I doing this?
I can quit Buzzfeed. I know I can. You never want to quit a job the first day, though. If something comes up and you need it back, you won't get another chance. I know that from experience. My goal is to see exactly why I was hired, and if it's an okay job. If I change my mind, I can always quit and go back to Starbucks.
My phone started to ring, and I sighed in relief when it was Ashly. At least she was sane, unlike Sara.
"Hey, Ashly," I said, grabbing my keys from the counter.
"Yo," she said cheekily. "I'm really excited for you to be coming, Lev. I know it seems bad, but trust me, it's so amazing." I didn't question the fact that she just called me 'Lev'.
"I know I'm being all sour about it," I admitted, locking up my house. I jogged down my apartment stairs and into the outside world. "It's just not something I want to do. Video Producing seems so cool, but it's really not my ideal job." She made an understanding noise.
"I hear ya," she said as I got in my car. "I was skeptical at first, too. But then I met all these super awesome people, and now it's my dream job. Not many people get a job where they wake up and think, 'I can't wait to go to work.' We're lucky for that."
I silently agreed. It seemed like everyone at Buzzfeed loved each other. They were all like best friends, but it's just not my style. I like close friends, and very few of them. I said my goodbyes to Ashly and started driving to work.
Work, huh? I'll never get used to saying that.
As I pulled into the Buzzfeed parking lot, the dying feeling in my stomach rose to my throat. I fixed my hair in the car mirror (why on earth am I trying to look good for this?) and started walking towards the building. I opened the door, still feeling awkward around the new environment. Quinta waved to me and gave me a quick hug.
"Hey, girl," she said, smiling. "Welcome to Buzzfeed." I forced a happy smile on my face, but I probably looked like I was about to crap myself.
"Thanks, Quinta," I said gratefully. "I'm a bit nervous, to be honest. Do you think it's gonna suck?" She shrugged.
"My first day sucked, but that's only 'cause I started my period," she joked. I laughed. "Anyway, come with me. Sean wanted me to show you everything." She lead me to the long tables with computers and people sitting at them. She pointed to an empty seat. "That's where you'll sit."
"Thank you," I said, plopping my bag on the chair. Quinta showed me around some more, like where the filming room was, the bathrooms, the cafeteria, and the kitchen. I was told I could pretty much eat anything, which I guess was a plus.
I sat back down at the computer after the tour was done."If you need anything, just ask," Quinta said, smiling kindly. She waved another guy over, which I recognized as Keith. He grinned and waved at me slightly. "Keith, do you care showing Levi how the editing program works?"
"No problem," he said, pulling a chair up next to me. We went through the basics of editing a Buzzfeed video, and he showed me the website and everything. Once we were done, he shook my hand. "Keith Habersberger. Pleasure to meet'cha."
"Levi Bradley," I said, grinning slightly. I sort of admired Keith. He was the funniest guy in Buzzfeed, in my opinion.
"I'm in charge of introducing you to people," he said. I followed him to a group of people in the cafeteria talking. "Hey, this is Levi. She's new to BuzzfeedVideo." They all said 'hiiiii'.
"Oh my god, I love your shirt," a girl with short blonde hair gasped. I looked down at my t-shirt. I was wearing a pink shirt that said, Vegetarian When Convenient. I laughed slightly and thanked her. "I'm Becky Harris, by the way. Nice to meet you."
"Same." We shook hands.
"I'm Zach," a small guy said. Okay, saying 'small' is a bit of a stretch because we were the same height, and I'm wearing flats. I recognized him as one of the Try Guys.
"Hiya Zach. Levi."
"I'm Andrew," Andrew said awkwardly, shaking my hand. I smiled. I can tell he has anxiety, but so do I, so it doesn't matter.
"My name's Ned," Ned grinned, shaking my hand. "You kinda look like my wife." The crowd laughed, along with me.
"I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks, Ned," I laughed. I made eye-contact with Eugene, and he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. I rolled my eyes. "I'll see you guys later." I started walking away, but Eugene ran up to me and caught up with me. I stared at him through the corner of my eye as we walked. "Yo, Eugene."
"Hey," he smiled. "How's the job so far, Levi?"
"Better than I expected," I admitted. I narrowed my eyes slightly. "You remembered my name, eh?"
"How could I forget?" He said, effortlessly flirting.
"Don't even try, buddy," I snorted, flicking him away and sitting down. His grin widened. "What are you smiling for?"
"We sit next to each other," he laughed, sitting down next to me. I groaned.
This is so weird.
