I applied the last bit of lipstick and sighed. I grabbed my hairbrush and started combing through my thick brown hair. I was wearing a simple white sundress, and a pair of white flats.
After many hours of begging, my father had finally convinced me to see my mom. I don't want to, and I know I shouldn't. After all, she betrayed me and my dad. She betrayed herself. As I finished getting dressed for the day, I saw my phone start to vibrate. I picked it up and looked at the contact name. Unknown number. I answered it casually.
"Levi here."
"Hey," the voice said. I groaned inside. Eugene. "Um, since we're both off today, I was wondering if you wanted to get some coffee with me?" I immediately felt bad. This is the first time he's called me, and I'm going to have to turn him down.
"Sorry, Eugenie," I said, using his nickname. "I can't right now. I'm, um.. going to see someone."
"Oh." He seemed disappointed. "Well, good luck with the guy you're seeing. I guess I'll go-"
"Eugene, it's not like that," I laughed slightly. "I'm seeing my mom. I haven't seen her in a while, you know?" I chuckled nervously.
"Oh, okay," he piped up. "Well, tell her I said hi. I'll let ya go. Bye, Levi."
"Yeah, bye," I hung up and put my phone away. Little did Eugene know, I would not be telling my mother any of the sort.

I pulled into the prison parking lot. I took a deep breath before getting out and entering the stone building. A police officer, at the front desk, looked up at me. I read his nametag. Officer Kyson.
"Hi, uh.." I wiped my sweaty hands on my dress. "My name's Levina Bradley. I'm here to see Hana Bradley." He looked through some papers, nodded, and looked back up at me. He walked out from behind the counter.
"Come with me," he said, leading me away. We went a little while into the hallways, until we stopped at a stone door. He pointed at it and looked back at me. "She's in here. You get 30 minutes." I nodded, nervous, and shakily opened the door. My mother, in her orange-colored glory, sat at the table in the middle of the room. She smiled sadly at me.
"Oh, Levi," she murmured. "Come, sit down." I did as I was told, watching her carefully as I placed my bag on the floor. She smiled and placed her hand on mine. I almost cringed. "It's been a long time, yes?"
"Mhm," I said, pulling my hand away. "Dad told me to come, so.." Her eyes brightened.
"I haven't seen Ryan-your father- in a while. He left me a message. How is he?" I held back a wince. Even after everything that happened, she still loves my dad. I guess that's what true love does to you.
"Dad's good," I nodded slowly. "He's gotten a raise at the station."
"How wonderful," she smiled softly. I wanted to die in that very moment. That smile was the same one she gave me in court before she left for good. "So, Levi, what's new in your life?"
"What?" I stared at her.
"Are you still doing film?" She questioned. I hesitated, but gave in. It's not like telling her I work at Buzzfeed will be a threat.
"Yeah, actually," I sighed. "I'm working at Buzzfeed now. I'm officially a Junior Video Producer."
"Good, good," my mom nodded, approving. "Any new friends? Lovers? You know I don't mind the gender, Levi." I almost laughed. She always used to say, 'Gender's a label, and people are attractive.'
"I've met a few friends," I smiled to myself. "You remember Sara. I'm close with her and her roommate, Ashly. And then there's the other employees, like Gaby or Alison, or Andrew or Zach, or Keith or Eugene.."
"I'm glad you're becoming so popular, love," she smiled. "It reminds me of how easily you became friends with people in your grade school years. You were a social butterfly then." There was a silence between us. It lasted for about a minute, before my mom spoke up again. "You know I love you, right?"
The statement shocked me. I can't remember the last time my mother told me she loved me. The thought made me begin to cry. Tears welled in my eyes. My mom's gaze softened when she saw my face.
"Oh, baby, come here." She murmured comfortingly. I choked up a sob and she held me close, whispering sweet words into my ear. "Shh, baby, it's okay.. It's okay, baby girl..."
"Mama," I sobbed. "I love you, Mama. I love you so much.." I hiccuped, then cried some more. I heard a sniffle from her, and soon, we were both sobbing into each others' arms. She cried even harder when I said two words. Two meaningless words to another person, but to my mom, it meant the world. In that moment, I didn't think much of it. Looking back on the day, I know I made my mom happy.
"Happy birthday."
Five days later, the woman was dead.
