I awoke to the noise of birds singing and cars driving. I stirred on the couch and slowly opened my eyes, adjusting to the light of the sun outside. I rubbed my eyes and sat up, looking at my surroundings. Eugene's place. Right.
"Afternoon, Lev," Eugene grinned at me, strolling through the hallway. He was wearing a pair of baggy gray sweatpants and a black tank top. I coughed, looking the other direction of his muscles.
"Afternoon," I nodded to him, remembering the previous events last night. Taco Bell. Crying. Eugene kissing me on the cheek. I shook my head and gave him the most convincing smile I could muster without becoming pink in embarrassment. "What's for breakfast, or, should I say lunch?"
"Uhh.." Eugene shrugged, looking through his pantry. There wasn't much. "You can have whatever you want, to be honest. I don't remember the last time I made pancakes."
"Pancakes?" My face lit up. "I haven't had real pancakes since I was a kid. Every Saturday, my mom would make pancakes, and my dad and I would fight our way to the stack, always seeing who could get more in their stomachs.." I smiled to myself. Eugene stared at me, probably thinking about my mom.
"Well.. you wanna make pancakes?" He grinned and lifted a box of Bisquick. I became excited and hopped off the couch and bounded into the kitchen. Emma and Pesto followed eagerly for who knows what.
"Okay, first you have to heat up the pan," I recited my mother's words when she taught me how to make pancakes when I was twelve. Eugene turned the stove on high. "Now, do you have eggs and milk?"
"Yep," he said, popping the 'p'. I opened his fridge and cringed at the amount of beer cans he owned. I grabbed the milk and eggs. Just as I was taking out two eggs, Eugene tapped me on the shoulder. I placed the eggs on the counter and turned to him. "You have something on you."
"What? Where?"
"Here." He broke out into a smartass grin and bopped me on the nose with pancake mix. I flinched and stared at him, my hand placed on my heart in a fake offended way.
"Oh, you little shit," I scowled, taking some pancake mix and whipping it at him. He coughed up and laughed, throwing a handful of pancake mix. I squealed and threw a handful back as well. I was covered in pancake mix head-to-toe, and so was Eugene. I ended up slipping on the mass of pancake mix on the floor, and so did he. We looked at each other and burst out laughing. I wiped a tear out of my eye, but ended up getting pancake mix in it.
"Well, this'll be a disaster to clean up," Eugene stared at the horrendous sight before us. I laughed even harder.
"Let's just get McDonald's pancakes, okay?" I giggled. He laughed and nodded.

About twenty minutes later, Eugene came back from McDonald's. He lifted a McDonald's breakfast bag, and my grin went as wide as his. "I got pancakes n' hashbrowns. I didn't know what drink you liked so I figured you could drink something from the fridge."
"Thank you, Eugenie," I said, wringing my wet hair out. I took a shower while he was gone with his permission, to get all the pancake mix off of me. Eugene just wiped his off. "Hey, do you have any brushes? My hair is going to get knotty."
"Of course. You think my hair gets this amazing naturally?" He joked, giving me a cheeky smile. "They're in the bathroom. Hurry up though, the food's gonna get cold."
"Rightio." I gave him a thumbs up and went to the bathroom and closed the door. I picked up a blue hairbrush and began brushing through my thick, brown hair. I stared at myself in the mirror as I did so. I was calm, until a thought crossed my mind.
I just slept at Eugene's house. And he kissed me last night. AND WE HAD A FLIRTY FOOD FIGHT.
I internally cried. I told myself that it was just a one-night stand, so why do I keep coming back? It seems like my life is turning into a big ol' shithole. My dad's a work-a-holic, my mom passed away, Eugene keeps stringing me on, and not to mention that girl named Alyssa. I can't help but wonder if what she said was true. If it was, why would I go to Taco Bell with him? Why would he try to set up a date with me on the day I saw my mother, if he didn't want to see me again? Why would we have a flirty food fight with pancake mix?
I shook my head and left the bathroom. Eugene was preparing the pancakes and hashbrowns.
"Coffee, soda, milk, what?" He asked me, handing me a plate of two pancakes, syrup and butter, and two hashbrowns.
"Dr. Pepper, please," I said, sitting down on the couch. I tried not to think of how he kissed me on the cheek last night. Pesto and Emma were in the kitchen, eating their dog food. I checked my phone. 11:47. I didn't have to go to Buzzfeed until 2:00, so I decided to enjoy this time while it lasted.
"Dr. Pepper for the lady, and coffee for the gentleman," he set my soda down on the coffee table. I took a big drink and watched Eugene pick up the remote. I poured syrup on my pancakes and took a giant bite. He immediately went to Cartoon Network. Steven Universe was on. He turned to me, his eyes embarrassed. "Sorry, I didn't ask. Do you wanna watch something else-"
"Awe, yes!" I cheered, nearly choking on my pancakes. "I love this show." Eugene stared at me, clearly surprised. I looked at him questioningly. "What?"
"Nothing, I just.." He cleared his throat and looked away. "You looked really happy, is all..." My cheeks heated up and I quickly looked down. The nervous atmosphere faded quickly, and soon, we were both laughing at the TV and choking on our pancakes and hashbrowns. I took a swig of Dr. Pepper to wash it down.
"I better go," I said, tossing my remaining food in the trash. "We've got work in like, two hours. I need to get changed out of these clothes and get ready."
"Alright," he smiled at me, making my stomach twist. "I'll see ya at work, Lev."
"See ya, Eugenie," I smiled back and gathered my things before leaving. I made sure to give Pesto and Emma hugs and kisses before leaving. I was halfway out the door when I realized my car was at work. Eugene laughed when I came trudging back in, ego-less, asking for a ride home. He took me home in his car. Before I got out to enter my apartment building, he stopped me.
"Do you need a ride to work after this?" He asked. I thought for a moment. I don't want to give him anymore trouble.
"Nah, that's okay," I said, giving him a thumbs-up. "I'll get somebody to take me, and if worst comes to worst, I'll get an Uber. See ya." I waved goodbye to him and entered my building. I unlocked my front door and greeted my cat, Anya.
"Hey, baby girl," I rubbed her back and set my stuff down on the couch. I filled Anya's food and water bowl and cleaned out the litter box. I got dressed and plopped on my couch, sighing in exhaustion. I still have time before I need to go to work. And even though I said I didn't like him, my cheeks burned at the thought of him kissing me again.
