It's become an effort to get out of bed.

Everyday, I'd have to think, is it really worth it? And, with no answer, I would get out of bed and go to work. Sometimes I was happy, most of the time I felt shitty. Perhaps, if I didn't visit her on her birthday, I wouldn't feel this way? No, that's not right. I'd still want to die. She was my mother, after all. She still is, and always will be.

Sometimes I wish she wasn't.

Today was like any other. I questioned my sanity, got dressed, and went to work. Even work was becoming a burden. It's not like I did anything worthwhile. Time passed, days passed, and on one night as I was packing up, Eugene caught my attention.

"Hey, um, Levi.." He smiled at me. I didn't smile back. What reason do I have to? "You've been seeming kinda sad lately, so I was wondering if you wanted to get dinner tonight? It might cheer you up." I stared at him in surprise. So, it was that obvious? Despite my bitter mood, I couldn't help but break out into a small smile at his attempt to make me feel better.

"You know what?" I said, smiling to myself. "That's just what I need to take my mind off of things. Thanks, Eugenie." He grinned wide.

"So, how does Taco Bell sound?" He said, wiggling his eyebrows and giving me his arm. I laughed at his poor attempt at being a gentleman, and I gracefully took his arm as we marched out of Buzzfeed.

"Oh, Taco Bell sounds exquisite. Perhaps we could try a taco? I've never had one before, my kind sir." I wiggled my eyebrows back, and he laughed. We got in his car and drove to Taco Bell. I ordered one Nacho BellGrande. I need some fattening food to make me happy. Eugene got three hard tacos. We sat down, and I started to eat. After a while, I noticed Eugene staring at me. I looked at him, annoyed, with a mouthful of chips and said, "Wha do yew wunt?" (What do you want?) He burst out laughing.

"Nothing, nothing!" He laughed harder, putting his hands up. "You just look so infatuated with nachos. Never seen a girl eat a Nacho BellGrande like it was the Joker and she was Batman." I pouted, my cheeks dusted with pink. I swallowed my food.

"Well, most girls are horrified to eat like pigs when in front of guys," I nodded confidently. "I'm gonna eat if I wanna eat, goddammit." He laughed. His laughter died down, and I found him staring once again. "Eugene, what?"

"..Is there something wrong?" I tensed and looked up at him. His eyes were concerned, and he seemed to nod when looking at my current state, as if to confirm his thoughts. "You just seem so.."

"Depressed?" I muttered bitterly, staring at my food. He hesitated, but nodded.

"You know I'm here for you," Eugene said gently, looking at me softly. It was a confusing gaze - one I didn't understand. So many emotions. "Everyone at Buzzfeed's here for you. I was talking to Ashly earlier today, and she's concerned, too. We just want you to be okay." My cheeks became warm and wet, and I choked up when I realized I was crying.

I said everything.

I told him about my mom, how she killed four people, and how she went to prison. I told him about her birthday, and how we cried together, and how I wished her happy birthday. I told him how she died. Through it all, he was rubbing my back, whispering sweet nothings into my ear to calm me down, just like my mom did. All of this happened in Taco Bell.

After a while, I was just sniffling. We finished our food, and as we were walking back to his car, he stopped me. With a cocky grin, he turned to me and said,

"Some first date, am I right?"

I laughed harder than I had in days. I wiped my tears, and gasping for breath, I laughed even harder. He started laughing at my weird state, and soon, we were both dying of laughter in his car. The laughter died down, and he shot me a shy grin.

"Wanna spend the night?"

"Dang. First date, and I'm invited to come over." I said, entering his apartment. I took off my shoes as he chuckled. It looked no different than how it did when I first came over. Quickly, it became silent and awkward. He coughed to break the silence.

"So, um, you can sleep on the couch," he said, gesturing toward the couch. "If you need pajamas or something, you can use one of the shirts." Just as he was about to continue, two dogs came bounding down the hallway and jumped on me. I squealed. "Emma! Pesto! Down!"

"No, no," I giggled. "They're cute." He broke out in a grin when I carried the girl dog (Emma, I believe?) to the couch with me. "I'm sleepin' with this cutie tonight."

I was given a blanket and a pillow from Eugene's bedroom. As he was turning off the lights and going to his room, he gave me a kiss on the cheek and quickly left before I could say 'whaaa?' My cheeks went bright red and I gasped, touching my lips. I squealed quietly into the pillow, inhaling the scent of Eugene's pillow. My cheeks, still red, burned in the dark night.

"First date, and he's already kissed me. Dang."

With a dopey smile, I drifted off to sleep, thinking of the morning soon to come.
