Tris's Pov
On my way to school I immediately feel vulnerable, as if one tap on the shoulder will set me off. That one nightmare that happens every so often is enough to make me think that what happened to my father will happen to me. Arriving to school, nothing occurred but I'm almost positive something will happen later, causing me to be hyper aware of my surroundings. As if on cue, I feel a hand on my shoulder and someone saying "Tris," but before I even look to see who is was I immediately retract my arm ready to punch them, when my fist is caught.
"Tris, what's wrong? Why are you breathing so heavily?" Tobias says.
I don't even realize I was breathing heavily or clenching my eyes shut when he pointed that out. Inside my head I have an internal debate on whether to tell him if I had a nightmare or not.
"I don't want to talk about it," I mutter.
"You can trust me Tris, I'm here," Tobias says reassuringly.
"It's a touchy subject..." I say unconvincingly. I don't allow him to reply as I'm already walking away to my first class.
Even after months of being here, I thought things would be better. Somehow I had made myself think that I was only getting bullied because I was the new kid, and it would soon dissipate as the year went on. Even with all the effort I've been making to make myself invisible, it just keeps getting worse.
As the day goes on, I'm met with my usually bullies that do the usual things. Not so much from the people at Christina's lunch table, but after my encounter with Marlene no ones been making any effort to speak to me. One friend. That's all I'm asking for. One friend that doesn't mind my imperfections, that doesn't care that I'm broken, and that they like me for being me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm sitting in the coffee shop, in a secluded corner alone, waiting for Tobias to show up.
"Hey, I was wondering if you'd show up," I say with a slight smile on my face.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," he says smiling back. As he sits down I can already tell what he wants to talk about. "You want to tell me what happened earlier?" concern clearly filling his voice.
"Uhm.. it's really personal, and it's really hard for me to talk about." I say hesitantly. He gives an encouraging nod for me to continue, reassuring me that it's ok to tell him. "I had a nightmare that one day when I came home, I walked inside unwelcomed with the foul smell that I almost threw up. I ventured inside, room to room, to find out what exactly happened, and when I walk into the kitchen.." I have to stop myself from speaking to hold my hand into a fist and placing it on my face, just above my top lip to keep from crying. "I walked into the kitchen and my dad was on the floor, blood seeping out everywhere immobile. Unmoving. Dead," this is where I completely lose it. I start silently crying, because we are in a public place but thankfully my back is turned from anyone.
"Tris... I'm--"
"I'm not done yet. This isn't just some random nightmare that came up over a bad day. It's something that actually happened and something I came home to when I was 14." Everything just flows out of me, and I want to continue but Tobias stops me.
"I know you want to continue with what happened, but I feel that we should go somewhere more
private," he says as he stands up and hands me my coat."Okay.."
The walk outside is silent, and tears are still running down my face. Once we get in, I just spill everything.
"Aside from the recurring nightmare, when I saw his body on the ground I immediately called the police. They came in less than five minutes but he was gone hours before I came home. Murder was his cause of death. The only piece of evidence was the knife left on the side of his body, free of any finger prints or DNA. So the police and detectives were unable find the criminal. Any people of interest all had alibis that were confirmed therefore led nowhere. The person still walks free to this day and it terrifies me that Caleb, mom, or even myself could be next."
"I'm so sorry Tris, I don't know what to say.." Tobias says.
"That's okay, I didn't really expect you to," trying to lighten up the mood.
"That's the Bea I remember. Always optimistic when she can be." he jokes.
"You know it," I say laughing. "Just one question. Can you sit with me during lunch tomorrow? I mean, you don't have to considering none of your friends like me, but it's your choice. It's nice talking to a great friend."
"I've been waiting for you to ask. No problem, I'll deal with my friends too," he says smiling.
