It's been about three weeks since Naruto's accident. Sasuke, now a genin, has had missions almost every day with his new team, Kakashi Hatake, a jonin and leader of Team 7, Sakura Haruno, a genin and diehard Sasuke fangirl, and some guy named Takumi Takahashi, also a genin. Naruto, being alone, took to training with Kurama in his mindscape whenever Sasuke was on a mission, with Iruka coming by every once in a while to make sure Naruto got something to eat. Sometimes Iruka took Naruto out, but it was rare so Naruto usually stayed in his room, sometimes with the window open for fresh air, but also as training.
Over the last week, whenever Naruto changed the bandages, he could vaguely make out what seemed like silhouettes, especially if he had a light on or was facing the window. After the first few times it happened and he realized he wasn't imagining it, he asked Kurama about it, who just said, "All in good time, kit."
Although, that didn't stop Kurama from having Naruto do certain things whenever he changed the bandages. Things like, "Turn your head slightly to the left and tell me what's over there. No, not in your mindscape, there's barely anything in here! Out there! Face your window and turn your head slightly to the left! There you go, now what's over there? I know, I know, just trust me!" After the first few days of that, Naruto was really wishing he hadn't told Kurama about it. Although, it helped Naruto figure out how to talk with Kurama without going into his mindscape.
Today was Sasuke's first day off since he became a genin, and he was sleeping in. Evidently their missions were taxing on the young Uchiha. Naruto didn't mind. It wasn't like they really had anything they could do together now that he was blind.
Naruto was in the process of changing his eye bandages when suddenly he heard footsteps outside his room. He turned and looked, yes looked, to see the shadowy form of... "Sasuke?" Naruto asked, confused. "I thought you were asleep?"
Sasuke, however, wasn't thinking "sleep" anymore. He was thinking, and saying, "What the heck?! What's up with your eyes!? And how did you know it was me?! I didn't make enough noise for hardly anyone to even tell someone was here!"
Naruto realised his mistake. It was true that a normal person wouldn't be able to hear Sasuke when he was half asleep and walking, as he subconsciously started walking as silently as a highly trained spy nin out of habit. But what did he mean about his eyes?
"I don't know what you mean, what's up with them?" Naruto asked, trying to avoid answering the other question.
Sasuke seemed to not notice what Naruto was doing, because he answered Naruto's question. "They're... They're there! They were gored out in that accident, but now they're back! And not only that, they're turning purple! I say turning because they're still kind of blue, but they're a darker blue with indigo and some purple specks here and there," he said, describing them very beautifully. They were, in fact, changing color slowly, and they were going to continue changing for quite some time.
"They're... What? Turning purple? W-what do you mean?" Naruto asked, quite surprised himself. Kurama had told him he'd been slowly trying to regrow his eyes, so that wasn't such a big deal to him. Since he couldn't see yet, he didn't even know about the color change. And since he always changed his bandages when no one else is around, this was definitely the first he'd heard of it.
"How should I know? I'm just telling you what I see!" Sasuke said, now wishing he'd been able to spend more time with Naruto after the accident. Maybe if he had, he'd have already known about Naruto's mysterious changing eye color, let alone the sudden restoration of them! "But you didn't answer my other question!"
There it was. Time to put his questions about his new eye color aside and answer the second question.
Naruto sighed. "Ever since I first woke up in the hospital, my hearing has been better. That's how I could tell it was you at the hospital when you came to get me. I heard your breathing. That's also how I knew you were here, or at least that someone was here since your breathing was too quite for me to hear unless I was trying to. I heard footsteps. That's when I turned to look, mostly out of instinct."
"Yeah, but if you didn't know it was me this time just by my breath, how did you know?"
"Your hair and height, mostly, since I couldn't make out anything else. Also, you smell faintly like your house, although I couldn't smell anything until after I heard your footsteps before I turned."
"Wait, my hair? My height? What is going on, I thought you were completely blind!" Sasuke exclaimed.
Naruto shrugged. "So did I until about a week ago when I was changing my bandages."
"Wait, so you've only been able to see after that accident for a week? How well can you actually see?"
"So far, only shadows, although they're getting clearer almost everyday. I'm starting to be able to see more than just silhouettes."
Sasuke was dumbfounded. Using extra sensitive hearing that he's only had for about three weeks now and really crappy eyesight he's only had for a week, he was able to tell who was silently creeping around his house when he's usually all alone.
"I've been training my eyes to get better everyday whenever I change my bandages. I don't really need them anymore, but I kind of like them so I keep putting them back on," he lied. It wasn't a complete lie, he did actually like them, but he still needed them.
"Naruto... Do you still want to be a ninja?" Sasuke asked suddenly.
"What? Well, of course, although I doubt that'll ever happen," he replied.
"Naruto, you should keep all of this to yourself, at least until your eyesight improves and you can see better. Also, you should keep the fact that your eyes are mysteriously back and changing color a secret, probably no matter what. If you want, I could help you train on my days off and after my missions. You're definitely going to become a ninja," Sasuke declared. He knew that if Naruto could prove that he could be useful, he could still become a ninja, although he'd have to really work at it.
Naruto smiled. He'd like that. He'd really like that. "What about all the other skills a ninja needs?"
"Remember those boxes Iruka-sensei gave us?" Sasuke asked.
"Boxes? What boxes?! You never told me there were boxes!" Naruto exclaimed.
"Right. Sorry, I forgot. Anyways, Iruka-sensei gave us each a small box, but I forgot to tell you about yours and only opened mine a few days ago. Inside there were some directions to an old Uchiha training ground that's currently unused, a key, and a note that said, "The Hokage kept this training ground for you so that when you were made a genin you would have a place to train privately in your clan's jutsu. He gave me this map to give you once you made genin, but in light of recent events, I've decided that it'd be best to give the map to you now. Please use it wisely. Also, the key is to the Uchiha's safe box at the Konoha Bank, which contains scrolls and other documents containing the clan's jutsus. Again, use them wisely." I was thinking of using that training ground for our training. For the first few weeks I'll go just by myself, then slowly I'll start taking you, too. That would raise the least amount of suspicion," Sasuke replied. If they were going to do this, they were going to do it right. Well, as right as they can in this case.
"Sounds good. You going to go now or after your next mission?" Naruto asked, putting the new bandages on over his eyes, as he was starting to feel the strain on his eyes.
"After I get dressed, I'll go. Have you eaten?"
"I had some toast with jam earlier. Iruka-sensei came and helped this morning. I think we should tell him I should be okay on my own now. What do you think?"
"Might be a good idea, but we'll tell him after we start training together."
Naruto nodded. "Okay, sounds like a plan. Now get something to eat! Your stomach is annoying me!"
