I wanted to just think that what happened yesterday was just a one time thing. But that was before I knew another storm was brewing.
---
I kept a blue wrapped up box with a bow on top inside of my locker. I was waiting for the special moment to open my locker. I checked my watched and right on time, Jota walked into the school, normally, and as if today was just any other day of the year.
When he saw me I gestured my hand for him to come to me quickly. He made a light jog over to me and I smiled brightly. "Guess what day it is~"
"Well I know it's the day of the geography test?" Jota raised his eyebrow, unsure as to why I was so cheery.
I rolled my eyes and opened my locker, "Look," I said, pointing to the present sitting on the top shelf, "I got that for you! It's your birthday duh!"
Jota chuckled and took the box, "Oh yeah it is. But you didn't have to get me anything."
"It's nothing big really, but just open it. I think it's cute so if you think it's lame, just don't say it to my face..."
Jota laughed again and ripped open the wrapping paper. When he opened the box, it revealed a picture frame with a collage of our pictures from when we were kids up until now. I even decorated the frame with glitter glue. "Aha, this is really cool."
"You're welcome, but even if you're lying, thanks for sparing my feelings."
"I'm not lying, I really do like it. Thank you." He stretched open his left arm and gave me the best bear hug he could with just one free hand. "I'm actually having a party tonight. A couple of my friends planned it. Do you want to go?
"Well of course! It's your birthday! Is it ok if Junhong comes too? But if not, it's completely fine."
Jota looked uneasy for a split second but then nodded his head, "It's alright, go ahead and invite him."
----
Junhong didn't show up at school today so I went to visit him in his apartment and also drop off the homework. I started driving recently so I was actually able to take mom's car with me today.
Once Junhong opened the door, I invited myself in, "Hey you didn't text me anything this morning, are you alright? Are you sick?"
Junhong shook his head, his eyes narrow, "No I just didn't want to go to school today."
"Hmph, that's weird. But at least you're not sick. I even brought some medicine for you, just in case." I set the cold medicine down and my eyes fell to something else that was already on the counter. It was an open bottle of those anger suppression pills Junhong used to take. A few were just lying on the countertop. I thought he'd thrown those away a long time ago.
"Are you gonna stay here for a bit?" Junhong asked me, taking my attention away from the pills.
"Oh no, um actually, did you know that today is Jota's birthday?"
"So? Who cares?" He said venomously.
"Uh he's having a party tonight, a birthday party, and he said that I can invite you."
He walked away and sat in front of his laptop, "No we're not going."
I slowly walked up beside his desk and put my hand on the back of his chair, "Wait, why?"
"What do you mean 'why?' Why do you want to go so bad, huh?" He shot out of his seat and was now looking down at me.
I stared incredulously at him and stuttered a bit in my speech, "B-because he's my friend."
