Chapter Twenty Five

*Helena’s POV*

My heart sank upon hearing the voicemail once the ringing had stopped. I sobbed uncontrollably. I had let Bella down, knowing that the one person she would want to help her wasn’t here. I sighed and quickly dialled ‘999’ into the phone and rang it. “Ambulance please, and fast!” I shouted into the phone. I continued to relay our address to the woman at the other end of the line before slamming it down and racing back over to hold Bella.

Her pulse had continued to decrease and I started to panic further, realising that if the emergency services didn’t hurry up, there was a high possibility that Bella would die right here and right now. Feeling my heart rate increase, my stomach began to churn. The silence was deafening and I couldn’t cope with the steady sound of the increasing pulse in my ears. Still holding Bella, I leant forward and kissed her on the forehead.

“I know you probably can’t hear this baby, but if you do, stay with me. I promise that from now on, I won’t leave you on your own all the time, I’ll always be here for you, starting from right now Bella. Please, don’t give up on me” I sobbed dramatically into her ears. I began to sing ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ by Abba to Bella as we would always laugh whilst watching ‘Mamma Mia’ as I couldn’t help but bawl my eyes out when the song came on. It always put into perspective just how far away she was and how eventually she would pick up and leave me on my own.

“The feeling that I’m losing her forever and without really entering her world. I’m glad whenever I could share the laughter, that funny little girl” I had to take a breath as my voice was beginning to crack, finding it so difficult to hold in the tears that were spilling over my lashes. “Slipping through my fingers all the time, I tried to capture every minute, the feeling in it, slipping through my fingers all the time”

The words I was gently singing to my baby held so much meaning and made me practically crumble beneath the dead weight that was Bella. I began to rock her body gently as I continued to sing the melody of the tune to her, knowing full well that she couldn’t hear or comprehend what I was saying.

“Waving goodbye, with an absent minded smile” I finished the song and my tears were rolling down my cheeks and lightly speckling across Bella’s face. Although her skin was extremely pale and the dark circles under her eyes had become more prominent, she looked extremely peaceful, as if she were asleep and dreaming. I softly wiped away the tears that were dripping from Bella’s cheeks and wiped the liquid away on my trousers. The mascara that she was wearing had come off and stained her pale cheeks a light black colour; she had clearly been crying before I found her.

With that, there was a strong knock at the door and a few loud rings of the doorbell. I leant forward and pressed an array of gentle kisses to her face before slowly rolling her from my lap and jumping to a standing position and jogging across the landing. The knocking repeated frequently and gradually became louder and stronger.

When I reached the door, the paramedics were practically beating it down in order for them to get into the house. I quickly unlocked the door to two stocky men in high-vis green coats and carrying medical equipment in the form of a large bag. I allowed them to continue through the frame and into the house. Locking it again, I turned around and shouted “she’s upstairs! First door on your left!” The two blokes nodded and ran up the stairs and to the landing. I couldn’t bear to go up there and watch them work on her in her own bedroom, so I thought it was best to try and call Harry again. I took Bella’s phone from my pocket and typed in the pass code to unlock it. I searched for Harry’s contact and persisted to dial it again.

Expecting to be waiting for a while, I was surprised when the phone didn’t even ring, but went straight to answer phone. Had he turned it off? Surely he couldn’t have, especially if there was already a missed call from Bella’s phone on it. He hadn't even attempted to return her previous call. Agreeing to myself that it must have ran out of battery, I sighed and gently rested the phone back in my pocket just in time for the two medics to retreat down the stairs, one of them carrying all of the equipment that they had used, the other cradling Bella in his large and muscular arms. I couldn’t control my emotions and I dropped to my knees when I saw the state that she was in.

The paramedic carrying the equipment rushed over to me and assisted me back to my feet, holding onto my arms to make sure that I was stable. I turned and cried into his chest. He raised his hand and gently rubbed circles into my back in an attempt to calm me down. “Come on love, we really need to get her to the hospital” he spoke calmly and quietly with a gentle smile plastered across his face. I nodded and was assisted out of the house and down to the ambulance that waited at the bottom of the path for us.

By the time we reached the vehicle Bella was already on the small bed in the back of it with the paramedic leaning over her and attaching her to several wires and a small drip to help increase her bodily fluids that she had lost during the time that she bled from her wrists. The other paramedic practically lifted me into the back of the ambulance and ensured that I was secured into my seat by the door. Once making sure that I was safe, he slammed the door shut and quickly jogged to the front of the ambulance where he got in and started the ignition. As we pulled away from the curb he turned on the sirens and began to speed off in the direction of the hospital. I just hope we weren’t too late.

The ambulance was extremely quiet expect for the sound of the paramedic at work to try and save Bella and to help her regain a stable condition. I felt confident and assured that she was now in safe hands and surely they should be able to do something to save her now. She was wired up to a monitor in order for them to keep an eye on her pulse, channelling her gentle and slow heartbeat into beeps. The steady pace calmed me down and was beginning to make me feel exhausted. My eyes were becoming extremely heavy from all of the crying that I had done in the past hour and I was finding myself drifting off into a very light sleep.

I began dreaming images in my head of us sitting in the hospital and Bella strolling out of the operating room with a big smile on her face. “I did it mum, I’m fine!” she cheered, making me cry with happiness that my baby was safe.

But the happiness was quickly interrupted by something that happened in real life. Something that I really didn’t like. I was abruptly awoken by the sound that I was dreading. The one thing that made my stomach turn. She had gone. Flatline.
