Chapter Twenty Six
My almost unconscious state was knocked sideways by the general rush at the table that my baby was lying on. I felt numb and I couldn’t contemplate what was actually happening. It was all such a blur but my attention was quickly drawn to the girl draped over the table with electrical equipment pinching her skin. “Clear” the paramedic shouted before shocking a bolt of energy into her weak body. I couldn’t watch as her body violently lifted from the bed before slamming back to it. I squeezed my eyes shut in the hope that this was a nightmare that I would drastically wake from any second.
The ambulance came to a sudden halt and the back doors were flung open as the table that she lay on was quickly escorted from the vehicle and into the hospital led by a number of different people. “Come with me ma’am, it’ll be fine, I promise” the paramedic that was driving said as he assisted me up from the chair that I was in, but I couldn’t take it any longer and I blacked out completely and fell into his arms.

My head was pounding as I slowly opened my eyes and plummeted myself into the brightness of the room that I was in. It took a while for me to adjust to where I was but then I realised that I was in an unfamiliar setting. The room was small and had just a coffee table, television and a couch that I was currently sprawled on. I slowly forced myself up from the position that I was in to sit up straight with my legs dangling over the edge of the sofa.
I rubbed my eyes and noticed that all of the makeup that I was previously wearing had come off and was marking my skin. The room was empty and I was confused as to where I was and why I was here. I stood from the couch, the blood rushing to my head and making me dizzy. I clung to the wall to adjust myself before I was fully stable again. I needed to get out of here. With that, a small but plump woman entered the room with a large smile across her face. “Are you Helena?” she beamed.
I reluctantly nodded, not sure why this woman knew my name. “Your Bella’s mother, aren’t you?” she spoke. That’s when I remembered what had actually happened. “Oh my god” I muttered, realising the situation that we were currently in. “Where is she?” I demanded, knowing that the last time I had seen my girl; she had barely been alive if at all. “Right this way!” she practically sang. The happy tone that she spoke in gave me optimism that Bella might just be okay but we both rushed out of the room and down what seemed like a never ending corridor to a small room on the left hand side.
“You must be quiet love, she’s still asleep from all the drugs and we don't want to wake her just yet, she needs all the rest she can get” the nurse whispered. I shook my head, trying to force the images of Bella lying dead out of my mind. Struggling to hold the tears back, I bowed my head and slowly entered the room, with the nurse following closely behind. “She’s over there” she said as she pointed in the direction of the bed where Bella lay still and asleep. “I’ll be right here if you need me” she whispered again before backing off and standing by the door. My feet were pinned to the floor and I couldn’t seem to drag myself to stand by the bedside.
I just stood staring at my beautiful girl, sobbing uncontrollably whilst examining the state that she was in. I felt relief when I watched the sheet gently rise and fall as her breathing was levelled and easy. I proceeded to walk towards her and I gently took her small, frail hands in my own and lifted them to my lips and showered kisses across the cold skin. I felt the warms tears roll down my cheeks before they gracefully fell, dotting all over the sheets that covered Bella’s body.
“I love you Bella, don’t leave me again” I whispered to her before once again kissing her hand. I pulled up the chair beside the bed and sat down uneasily, not taking my eyes off Bella. She looked so peaceful lying still and gently puffing out air signally that she was still alive. I couldn’t believe what had happened. She was only 16 and she had already been dead twice in her life. I didn’t care what I took; I would do everything in my power to make sure that Bella remained safe from now on. I just couldn’t wait for her to wake up so that I could let her know just how perfect she was.
She was the strongest girl I had ever met and the fact that she was going through her own troubles alone made my heart ache. How could she not have told me that she self harmed? How could she have even felt that low to self harm in the first place? Her family network was not the strongest but I thought she knew that I was always there if she needed me. And besides, with the way things were going with Harry, I thought Bella would have been a lot happier recently.
Then I thought about Harry. Maybe I should call him again to tell him what had happened because he might be worrying if he’s not hearing from us. I glanced to the door and noticed that the nurse had disappeared and I was now completely on my own with Bella. I knew that you weren’t allowed to use mobile phones in hospitals but surely this one time couldn’t hurt. I cautiously took out my phone, ensuring that no one else was around before ringing Harry again. But before the phone could begin ringing, the voicemail sounded once again.
I sighed, putting my phone back into my pocket and devoting my attention back to Bella. Even though she was in a critical condition, I couldn’t help but feel that she was now safe and the future was looking brighter for us both.
