Hello, my name is Avi. And I feel like a ghost. Here's my story-

It started in eighth grade, and now I'm a junior in high school. In seventh grade, I was living my life to the fullest. I was decently popular and had so many friends. And then over the summer, everything changed.

My best friend, at the time, offered me drugs. I'm not going to be specific about which type. I said yes. Don't ask me why, but I said yes. And it was the worst decision of my life. And you might be thinking, 'oh, you were in seventh grade, how would you even have drugs?' My best friend was a sophomore in high school when I was only in seventh grade, so he knew everybody he needed to for this.

My life went spiraling downhill after I said yes.

I became more and more popular as time went on and I was loving life, but life wasn't loving me at the time. I was invited to a party and soon found out that my close friend, Mitch, was also going. He didn't know about the drugs or anything like that.

A few days passed and it was now the day of the party. I was really looking forward to it, not only because I hadn't seen Mitch in months, but also because my girlfriend would be there, too.

I walked in the door of the host's house and all eyes were on me, I just didn't understand. It's not like I made a grand entrance, just simply walked through the door.

Some sophomore asked me if I wanted something to drink and I said, "No."

"Why not?" they asked me.

"I said no, so I would leave if I were you," I snapped.

"Fine," he spit harshly.

I honestly don't know what came over me. That was the first time I'd ever said no to something such as this.

I saw Mitch and walked toward him. "Avriel! What's up with you?! Why did you never tell me?"

"Tell you what?" I acted like I didn't know what he was talking about, but I did. "Tell me about the drugs! Your friend right here told me everything!" I stared hard at Mario and he scurried off. Mitch pulled me to an empty room. "Talk," Mitch shouted over the loud music.

"Okay ,well, you know Michael Piyona? The one that graduated already?" Mitch nodded. "He's the one that got me into that kind of stuff. And he still gives it to me, as long as I give him what he needs."

"Oh, Avi, why? Why would you do that to yourself?" Mitch asked kindly. I was very lucky to have Mitch as a friend, a really good friend, because he actually cared.

Mitch hugged me and said into my ear, "If I ever see you doing anything like that, I promise you I'll leave and we'll no longer be friends. Understood?"

I nodded, just holding him, because he was the only one that cared. And I was so grateful.

The party was just about over by then and I took Mitch home. Before I left, I just had one question.

"Hey, uh, Mitch? Would you mind if I stayed? Only for a little while? Please?"

Mitch giggled, "Of course you can stay, Avi. You know you're always welcome here. And besides, my parents are out tonight."

I sighed in relief, following my best friend into his house and shutting the door behind me.

We sat down on the couch, as close to each other as possible, ready to cuddle and watch SpongeBob.

Just as I was about to fall asleep, Mitch kissed the top of my head.

"Goodnight, Avriel. Be ready for school tomorrow."

~

I was woken up at 7 am by Mitch shaking my shoulders repeatedly until my eyes were completely open. "G'morning, Avi! Go get ready for school and I'll make breakfast." I smiled slightly and went to start getting ready.

I got dressed and everything else necessary. Walking downstairs, I smelled barbecue and was silently praising Mitch in my mind. Y'all can never go wrong with barbecue for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Trust me on this one and you won't regret it.

We sat down and began eating quickly so we wouldn't be late to school.

As soon as we finished, we ran to the car and got to school, just in time.

I walked into the classroom and, just like previously, all eyes were on me.

"What?" I questioned, since the teacher wasn't here yet. They all shook their heads and turned their attention back to something else.

That's how the whole school turned on me.

School was over and I finally got my freedom that I long for everyday. Except that day wasn't very nice. Michael pulled me into the alley in the back of the school.

"I have the stuff if you have the money," he finally spoke up.

Before I could answer him, I got a text.

Mitchie :)- where are you Avriel I can't find you anywhere please hurry

I looked backup at him and quickly replied to Mitch.

Avriel :)- I'll be out soon, don't worry

I put my phone in my back pocket and crossed my arms.

"So?" Michael said.

"I don't need it anymore. The one friend I have is going to leave me if I do this again. He was proud of me when I said no to the beer and I'm not letting him down. You can count on that." I stated.

Michael shifted his gaze to the left a bit and I never noticed.

Michael said, handing the bag over to me, "Oh, no, no, it's okay. I insist you have it either way." He threw it at me. Leaving me no other choice but to catch it. And he left. I didn't understand why until I looked to where he shifted his gaze to.

Turns out, Mitch was standing there, tears forming in his wide eyes.

"How much did you see?" I asked quietly.

"Enough to know that I have to leave," he cried. He was there from when Michael handed me the bag, to now. He didn't hear the speech about how I would make him proud. He ran away, sobbing uncontrollably and I felt the need to run after him. I needed him. He was my light in the dark. He was my life jacket when I was drowning. He was my coat in the rain. I needed him.

My best friend, Mitchell Grassi, was running away from me.

I gave up, I had to. I had been running for a half hour and no luck with catching up to him.

And that's how my best friend turned on me.

~

And now, here I am. Sitting in the bathroom, eating my lunch all by myself. And I deserve it. I was a complete dick to everyone at this school except Mitch and he's gone.

Having no friends, it hurts, it hurts so bad but there's nothing I can do anymore. The whole school hates me.

Goodbye, my name is Avi Kaplan. And I am the ghost.

Thought I'd switch it up a bit
