We made it back to camp and everyone surrounded us. Pearl and I stared at everyone while they whispered among themselves.
Rose made it through the crowd and stared down at us.
"Where have you two been?!" She said loudly, crossing her arms and staring at Pearl.
Everyone went silent and listened. I could feel my heart racing, I was just glad I wasn't the one who had to explain all of this...
"We were in the woods," Pearl replied.
"All night?" Rose said doubtfully.
I chimed in "Yes, Pearl was upset and she ran into the w-woods by herself, so I went after her." Rose and Pearl looked at me and well...so did everyone else. Pearl continued for me, thankfully taking me out of the spotlight. "She found me somewhere in the woods and it was too late to walk back to camp and we were both so tired, so we slept outside," she said without without hesitation.
Rose uncrossed her arms "You guys slept on the ground?"
"Yeah. By a dead tree, but it wasn't near any paths... And we slept on our jackets. Don't worry we know what to do if a wild animal comes at us and anyway we had our flashlights, and I'm practically an adult.!" Pearl replied.
Rose hugged both of us and sighed "I'm just glad you two are okay." We hugged for a bit then she smiled and pulled away, "But this doesn't mean you're off the hook."
