What do you mean?

After leaving the outhouse, I took the garbage bag and threw it out in the dumpster like all the other ones before it. There was no sign of the fox again, not even a measly squirrel. But there were birds everywhere; each one of them singing. It sounded so nice. I wish I could feel better than how I do now. I wish I could feel nice.

Pearl and I made our way back to the cabins and we sat down at a picnic table. I looked at her, sitting across from me, but she wasn't looking at me, she was looking around the camp, seeing if others were getting up. The sun was out, for real now. I wish I could know what she was thinking about. She doesn't look mad, or depressed, or happy...

I rest my chin in the palm of my hand and make it obvious that I'm looking at her. "Hey," I say. She stops scanning the camp and pulls her attention to me. She looks at me and a small smile creeps onto her face, one that she can't help. "Hello," She's looking at me now, her eyes scanning my face. The smile on her face eases away.

"I'm sorry for being mean, like, all the time." She says.

"Let's just move on and forget it. Everything's water under the bridge." I reply, hoping she'll recuperate my feelings.

She just stared at me, it looked like she was thinking deeply... or maybe mildly? About a minute later she finally replies with "Ok.".

I smile at her, everything right now looks so beautiful lit up by the sun, or maybe everything looks so beautiful because I feel...happy. The door to one of the cabins open and out come Connie with a book on martial arts, she gives me a little wave and slight smile, then makes her way to a picnic table and she begins to read. Pearl looks over, looking at her then back at me. Her face seems so dull, lacking any happiness or sadness, she just looks...dull.

"Amethyst." She says to me in a monotone voice. "Camp is going to end soon."

I stare at her, does she not know that I know this? Why's she so...upset? Camp ends in like a week and a half.

"Pearl, what does that mean?"

"It means we both have to go back to our normal...boring lives, away from each other. We'll never see each other again." She says, her breathing starting to pick up slightly.

"P-Pearl, no, please don't say that."
I took a few long, hard deep breaths and cleared my mind. I just needed to think.

"Amethyst, you live miles away from here, hours away from here. You live on the other side of the state completely."

"But it's not like I live on the other side of the planet! We can...we can-"

Pearl interrupted my train of thought and cut me off,

"What? move in toghether? Go to college together? Facetime every day?"

"We have more than a week here, together. Pearl, when camp ends we can decide how we want to continue."

She looked at me and I could tell she was finally feeling something. Hope?
