Caden’s POV

“Turn your head a little to the left.” Hayley told me. She dipped the piece of gauze into the alcohol and dabbed it onto my face again. I winced at the sudden pain, but after a second or so it would go away.

“Sorry.” She apologized and she ran a finger softly over the wound. I leaned into her touch and sighed in contempt. Why is it that being close to her makes everything feel so right? “I’m guessing that feels much better.”

I nodded. “How is Kent taking me being here?”

“Not too bad, I guess.” She answered, sticking a second Band-Aid onto my face. When she was finished, she leaned closer towards me. “It’s not like he hates you or anything. It’s just that,” She sighed and hopped onto the counter. “Maybe he’s disappointed that you chose the wrong side to play for, Caden.”

I pressed my lips together and turned away from her. I chose the wrong side? Well, after what Egan’s been doing lately, it’s possible that I have. But I think that I’m too deep in it anyways to even do anything. I grimaced at the thought.

“Hey, now.” Hayley called out to me. My eyes slowly traveled up her slender bare legs, over the baggy t-shirt she had on, and to her concerned looking face. “Did I get you mad or something? By that face you were just giving me…”

“No. I was just thinking.” I assured her. “I’m just…confused now. First, I was set on one thing. Finding Egan for Him and returning back up to the Heavens. Then I joined him. But now, I can’t help but think if I was even meant to be good.”

“Not everyone knows if they’re born good or bad. Or even if they’re meant to be good or bad.” Hayley started to explain.

I dropped my head. “Well, I ended up bad. And I can’t change that now.”

Her hands slowly cupped my face and turned me to look at her straight in the eyes. “Who said you can’t change that?” She demanded. “Good is defined by your actions. And I honestly believe you’re good. I know you’re good.”

I stood up from my seat and moved myself between her legs on the counter. My hands slid up her thigh and rested on the counter beside her hips. “Thank you.” I told her. She blushed and ducked her head. “I mean it. You give me hope, Hales. You make me believe He still has hope in me.”

“I’ve always known you weren’t bad, Caden.” She told me honestly.

I licked my dry lips, leaning closer towards her. She didn’t move an inch as she gazed at me. I brought my hands up along her hips, to her waist, then finally to cup her face. “Two days.”

She pulled her eyes away from my lips and gave me a confused look. “What?”

“Two days.” I repeated, leaning even more closely to her. “Since I’ve touched you like this.”

She closed her eyes, raising her hands to rest them on mines. “It wouldn’t have been that long if you wouldn’t have left like you did.”

I pressed my forehead against hers. “I can’t let Egan hurt you. If he knew about this, about us, he’ll most likely kill you.”

“Why?” She asked. “I never did anything to him.”

“He thinks you and I are a part of some sort of prophecy.” Hayley stiffened a bit under my touch. “What’s wrong?”

“Kent told me about a prophecy too. About a nephlim girl falling for a fallen angel.” She clarified. “Is that what you’re talking about?”

I nodded. “And that she chooses the fate of humanity.”

“What if she doesn’t want to choose?”

“She’s obligated to.” I told her. Then asked a question that’s been nagging me for a while now. “Hayley? Are you nephlim?”

“Yes.” She breathed out. “Actually, I don’t know. I mean—I hope I’m not.”

“So, when you burned Astarte…”

“My hand did it.” She explained quickly. “I don’t even know why. Or even how.”

I teetered towards her slowly until my lips pressed against hers. Warmth exploded within me like it always has been when I ever kissed her and I yearned for more. When I kiss her, I feel like I’ve never even left Heaven in the first place. She makes me feel pure again.

It must be true then. She’s the girl from the prophecy.

I smiled against her lips and she pulled away grinning. “Why are you smiling?”

“How can I not smile with you here?”

She blushed a beautiful shade of red.

So that explains it. That’s what Astarte meant as me being tainted. Hayley and I are the prophecy lovers. Astarte’s powers didn’t affect me because I’m spiritually linked to Hayley.

But that also means that she chooses whether the world lives or dies?

“What are you thinking about?”

I dragged my eyes up to hers. “Nothing.”

“Liar.”

I grinned. When I was about to kiss her again, I was suddenly ripped away and throw against the wall. I heard a gasp from Hayley and then her screaming, “Kent! What the fuck is wrong with you?”

I rubbed my aching head, trying to sit up to be only pushed back down by the neck.

“You think just because you helped her, you can just have your way with her?” Kent hissed at me, his eyes turning a molten gold color.

I looked up at him in shock. “You have your powers back? But…how?” When he didn’t answer, my eyes fell on Hayley.

Half angel, half human. And she’s very powerful compared to the full blooded angels. Much more powerful. And extremely valuable.

That’s what Egan had said. How is that even possible though?

Hayley’s POV

I took a couple of steps back from them as they both eyed me curiously.

“How did you give him his powers back, Hayley?” Caden asked me.

“I…”

“She doesn’t have to explain anything to you, Caden.” Kent snapped.

Caden ignored him and kept his eyes trained on me. “Hayley?”

“I don’t know. I really don’t.” I blurted. “I kissed him and poof. His wings and the light—“

I noticed Caden frown when I said that I had kissed him. I instantly regretted it and planned to apologize when he cut me off. “That’s not possible. A fallen is not supposed to get his wings given back to him. Once one’s fallen, it’s over.”

“What makes you so sure of that?” Kent asked him.

I looked at Caden.

“Because I helped Him make sure the last fallen never came back.”
