Chapter 20

Caden’s POV

I made my way back to the building after I walked aimlessly around the city in thought. All I could think about was Hayley and I hated it. I shouldn’t be thinking about her. I don’t deserve her.

“Egan?” I called out, once I made it inside. I furrowed my brows when I didn’t get an answer.

When I walked into the dining area, I spotted Egan there sitting on the ground with his elbows on his knees that were pulled to his chest. His eyes slid over to me and a chuckle escaped his lips. “I didn’t think you’d come back.”

“And why’s that?” I asked, making my way towards him.

“You’re little girlfriend stopped by.”

I stopped in my tracks. “What?”

“You’re girlfriend.” He repeated sternly. “I’m afraid you haven’t told me about her.”

I stared at him, processing everything he was saying. Hayley showed up here? Why would she even do that? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Egan got to his feet, taking an angry step towards me. “Don’t give me that shit, Caden. She knew your name. She was that damn nephlim He’s been going on about and you know it.”

“I don’t know—“

Egan slammed me against the counter and tugged at my collar. “Where is she, huh? I know you know where she is.”

I roughly shoved him off of me. “What do you want the nephlim for? She can kill both of us if we aren’t careful. You’re lucky she didn’t kill you.”

Egan and I stood there silently, glaring at one another. Someone suddenly cleared their throat to get our attention.

“I hate to break up such a good fight, but Lucifer sent me to help you two and I would like to get that out of the way.”

I turned around to see a man at the other side of the room. I already knew he was another demon.

“Why are you in such a rush, Agramon?” Egan demanded, obviously pissed that he interrupted us. My eyes narrowed at the name. Agramon was the demon of fear. “Can’t wait to go back to your pit of fire down there?”

Agramon only smiled. “I’m sure my ‘pit of fire’ will remain warm and cozy. But Lucifer has sent me to complete two jobs: Help you two and find Astarte.”

My eyes widened.

“Whenever you do find her, tell Lucifer that that bitch ran out on her deal.” Egan snapped at him.

Agramon nodded. “I’ll be sure to give him your message.”

I turned to Egan and frowned at him. “Egan, you need to know something.”

“Something besides your nephlim girlfriend?” He spat.

I rolled my eyes and grabbed his arm, pulling him into another room. “Look, she’s none of your business.” I growled. “What you should be worried about is the fact that Lucifer is going to want our heads.”

Egan stared hard at me for a moment. “What did you do?”

“Astarte’s dead.”

“What?” He exclaimed. “What do you mean she’s dead?”

“I mean exactly what I say. She’s dead.” I repeated, watching as he started to pace back in forth in frustration. “What are we going to do?”

“This is your entire fault. I’m not getting involved in this.”

I grasped his arm to stop his irritating pacing. “Remember that the both of us shed blood for these demons; demons that were your fucking idea of fun. Lucifer will want us both dead.”

He snatched his arm out of my grip and glared at me. “Then what do you propose?”

Hayley’s POV

“Hayley, is that you?” My mom asked me once I made it into my house. I hoped to sneak in and slip into my room, but I didn’t expect her to be in the living room.

She stood up from the couch to look at me. Her eyes widened when she looked over my attire. “Where’ve you been, honey? You’ve been gone for a couple of days…”

“I was just at Sammy’s house. I thought I texted you. I texted you, right?” I asked her. I could feel myself shaking all over, but tried hard to keep still.

She shook her head unsurely and stood up. “No, you didn’t. But are you okay, Hales? You look sick.”

“I’m fine!” I laughed and climbed up the stairs. “I’m just going to take a shower and head to bed!”

I ran into my room and shut the door so fast that I wasn’t even able to hear my mother’s reply. I made my way into my bathroom, shutting the door behind me. I needed a shower, anything to stop the jitters. Eversince what happened with Egan, I couldn’t stop shaking. I was completely scared of what I become. I was scared of myself.

I put on the water and started to relax a bit when the room started to heat up. I took off my shirt and jeans and set them aside on the floor. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, curiously looking over my face. There wasn’t anything wrong or out of place. For all I knew, I looked like a normal girl.

For now at least.

Taking off my bra and underwear, I slipped into the shower and let the warm water overwhelm me. It felt nice and refreshing. I felt less stressed for the first time in days.

After I finished, I made my way out of the bathroom while wrapping a towel around myself. I took another one off my shelf for my hair.

“Hales! You have guests!” I heard my mom shout to me from downstairs.

I quickly slipped on my pajama shorts and a tank top before making my way down the stairs. I came to a slow stop when I saw who was waiting for me down there.

Caden and Egan.

“What are you two doing here?” I asked them. Especially Egan. What was Caden still doing with him anyways? I thought he knew he wants me dead? And how did they find me?

“We need to talk to you. And your parents.” Caden told me. His eyes burned into mine, but it didn’t seem like it was from anger fortunately.

I squeezed my hands together to try to keep myself from throwing myself at him.  I just wanted to wipe that sad look off his face.

My mom wrapped her arms around herself and looked at them. “Do we know you?”

Caden smiled sincerely at her. “No. You don’t. But I think your husband does.”

I looked up at my dad who was behind my mother and noticed him staring at the two of them with his mouth hanging open. Did he know them? But how?

My father grabbed my mother’s arm and took a step back. “I think you two should leave.”

“Wait, is that you Henry?” Egan crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow. “Never thought we’d be seeing you again.”
