You listened closely for the loud footsteps, your ear pressed up against the apartment door. Finally, you heard the neighboring apartment door open and close, then the loud, angry footsteps of the asshole that lived next door as he moved down the hall.
You heard the elevator ding and opened your door, peeking out down the hallway just in time to see the elevator doors slide shut. You shut your door behind you and quickly sneaked down the hall to the window that looked out over the parking lot. You watched the asshole get into his car and drive off, then, taking your chance, moved back down the hall and towards the apartment next to yours.
You knocked on the door, knowing that you neighbor Misa was inside, most likely crying her eyes out.
"Who is it?" Came her cracked voice, tired and broken.
"Misa, it's me, Y/N," You called back lightly, sending a small smile to the peephole that she was no doubt looking out of. "Can I come in?"
It was silent for a moment, and then you heard her unlocking the door. It swung open to reveal your broken and battered neighbor. Misa was very petite, and while she was older than you, she reminded you a lot of Anna. She was so quiet and very kind, and you just couldn't understand how she ended up with such a bastard.
"Hello Y/N," She greeted weakly, not even bothering to hide her watery red eyes and the bruise on her jaw. You'd been over there so many times now, that she had finally given up trying to hide the truth from you. At first she would just cry about how she thought her boyfriend was cheating on her and how distant he'd become, but now you knew there was so much more to it than that. "Come in."
You stepped inside and once she'd shut the door, you immediately pulled her into a gentle hug. "Are you alright?"
She hesitantly hugged you back, a sigh leaving her lips. "No, not really."
You pulled back, gently grabbing her chin to inspect the bruises that lined her jaw and under her eye. "Oh Misa," You said quietly, seeing her tears building up all over again. "What's he done to you?"
Misa let out a dry laugh. "Whatever he wanted."
The two of you ended up sitting on the couch while she explained everything that'd happened, how she'd finally confronted him about the cheating and how he'd nearly beaten her unconscious.
"Jesus," You whispered, your heart sinking to your stomach as she lifted her shirt to show you the bruises along her back and stomach. "Sweetie, why are you letting this happen?"
"I don't have any other choice."
"Yes, you do. Do you have any relatives nearby? Any family you could go stay with? If you don't, there are groups, and shelters that will help you. Hell, come live with me."
"He would find me at a shelter," She said. "And I wont endanger you either. My parents live in America, and I would go in a heartbeat, but he controls our money and I have no way of getting out of here."
"You want to go be with your parents?" You clarified, and she nodded. "Then I'll pay for you."
Her eyes widened. "No, absolutely not! I could never ask that of you."
"You don't have to ask." You smiled. "I want to help you, Misa.. I can get you on a plane to America tomorrow, if you'll let me."
"But how? I can't just get you involved in my drama and take your money like that."
"I'm already involved, Misa. I've been involved in this since the moment I heard him throw you against the wall this morning. Please let me help you."
