Ethan’s Point of View

I clenched my jaw as I watched Austin hovering over Madeleine with tears sliding down his face. Was I uneasy because of the fact that Austin had genuine feelings for a mere hybrid? Or, possibly that I grew feelings for her that I only just began to acknowledge?

Zane stood beside me, enraged. I could see his fists clenched, nostrils flared and eyes sharp. He spoke as firmly as possible.

“We came to this planet on a mission only to fail? No fucking way!”

He bent down and swiftly had her in his arms before leaving the room to head up into our own room. Austin stood still, motionless, his fingers trembling.

“Brother. Go. I’ll sort this mess up.”

Zane’s Point of View

I laid her carefully our bed. She looked so delicate. Her wavy brunette hair flowed perfectly around her. Her intricate lips were pursed and bloody. Why was she the way she was? Why was she so goddamn perfect?

Austin rushed in and stood beside me. The bloody pansy was still tearing up.

“Grab some clean cloths and help with the blood?” He nodded instantly before rushing outside and silently closing the room door behind him.

I touched her skin. It was cold, nothing like I had remembered.

“Madeleine. Why? Now? Don’t you dare play with me. This better not be some trick. Who am I supposed hang out with now? You were the only decent female that I’ve met on Earth. Wake up.”

I waited, for a smirk response or a scrunch of her nose that I always admired. There was none. She remained lifeless.

So this was really it? Our mission cut short? What were the elders going to say? A hybrid was a one in a million chance and she was the one we were supposed to save. And we failed? I wiped her forehead where she was cut; the gash was about three to four centimeters thick. It went across for about eight centimeters before it stopped. Then the most absurd idea interrupted my thoughts.

I pulled the knife out that I had on my utility belt and carefully slid the blade along my palm. I let the blood seep out before I gently rubbed my palm over her wound. We had the ability heal, and perhaps with my blood it would heal her? Before even thirty seconds my wound had healed and there was only dry blood in its place.

“I don’t think that will do anything brother,” Ethan said sternly. I turned to him in fury.

“What the hell do you suppose we do then huh? We can’t just let this be! This was not part of the plan! It was not supposed to happen!”

He sat on the empty chair beside the dressing table and leaned on his hand that was supported by his knee.

“You don’t think that I want her to get better? You pest, don’t you think I know these things already? I’m the leader of this mission. I am your elder. Respect me.” Ethan bellowed. I automatically apologized.

“You should very well understand that you cannot rise the dead... all we can do is go to the safe house. That’s the best we can do at the moment.” I nodded. Ethan had always been the wisest.

Finally, Austin came back and wiped Madeleine clean. I wanted to help, but I knew that Ethan would not have allowed it. I sat back and watched Austin ring the blood out of the cloth before soaking it with warm water and wiping her down again.

I laid in bed, an uneasy feeling rumbled in my stomach. How could I sleep? Knowing that in the room next door, Madeleine was lifeless? I clenched my jaws and attempted to calm myself to sleep, the following days were going to be busy.

“Why?” She asked me. “Why did you stand by to watch me die? I thought you were supposed to be help me. You promised to keep me safe.”

“I’m sorry… this was not meant to happen.” Her figure was faint and dull; she was sitting by an old wooden chair. Her hair seemed to have lost its natural brunette colour and turned somewhat grey. I could tell that tears were rolling down her face. She looked up at me with her innocent eyes and pressed her lips.

“What will happen now? Please, don’t tell my mother just yet…” her rounded eyes were filled half way with tears. I nodded.

Before I could say anymore, all the colours of the dream intertwined and I felt like I was being sucked into another dimension.

The room was cold and sterile. I could hear the dripping of a leaking faucet. A baby crying in the near distance.

“This. Is not what you promised Zane.”  The figure was peering out the window with his arms across his back. His head was covered by a hooded cape. I waited for the man to continue.

“There is only a few ways to resolve this issue. Are you willing to do what you must allegiance Phenon.” I nodded, and somehow he knew I agreed before he spoke once more.

“Take her body to the place where darkness is welcome before two days dawn, in which you will find a talisman. I can say no more.”

I woke up, hyperventilating. ‘Darkness is welcome… ‘

Perhaps, the city of Defluo Umbra, more commonly known as the city of Defluo. Translating the Latin loosely, the city of Lost Shadows.
