You never thought it was weird when a strong pair of arms wrapped around you in the middle of the night. On the contrary - you cuddled closer to the person and smiled slightly, before dropping off to sleep.
You never thought it was weird that when you were sat on your bed crying into your hands, you would feel someone pull you into them so you could cry on their shoulder or in their chest - it, in fact, calmed you down.
You never thought it was weird that ever since you can remember the person would be there for you whenever you needed them, and they always seemed to know when you needed them... when you needed him.
You didn't know his name, age, birthday, address, phone number, favourite colour - anything.
You didn't know anything.
You didn't think it was weird that you didn't know his name, or that he never seemed to change age.
That was because you convinced yourself that you were crazy. You thought he was simply an illusion that your brain made up to make you feel better - and you'd never spoken a work to him, all the more reason to believe he was fake.
But that didn't stop you from clinging to him when he climbed into your bed on those winter nights, craving the heat his body brought you. Your shivering stopped as he cuddled you closer, stroking your hair to help you sleep.
One thing you did consider weird is that no matter how hard you looked, you could never find him. It was like you could only see him when he wanted you to, otherwise he was just another face in a crowd - another thing to miss in the corner of your eye.
So that night, when you were sat on your bed with your back against the wall as you tried to hold in your tears, it didn't surprise you that he climbed in through your window and walked over to your double bed, sitting opposite you with his legs crossed to mirror you.
You just stared into his bright blue eyes, feeling like you were about to burst out crying and for some reason you felt like you could now he was here - you felt like it was now safe to do so.
So your tears started to fall, unsettling your mascara that ran down your cheeks, leaving black paths like dribbling black ink.
He reached his hand to your face and stroked it, brushing away the tears that had started to escape as you started to sob. He pulled you forward then laid you both down before pulling you into his chest as you sobbed, stroking your hair to comfort you.
This normally worked, but that day you felt so empty and broken that you just couldn't stop the tears from falling down from your eyes. Your friends hated you because somebody accused you of spreading rumours about them, so your day at school was horrid. You'd come home to find your parents were fighting over your, now deceased, granddad, wondering how they were going to pay for his funeral and organise everything in time. You had gone to your room and stared at your text books, stressed to the point of self destruct.
He noticed that nothing he normally tried was working, so decided to try something different - something he'd never done in front of you.
He started to sing.
"When you try your best but you don't succeed,
when you get what you want but not what you need,
when you feel so tired but you can't sleep,
stuck in reverse"
Your sobbing started to calm as you heard his gentle voice float into your ear, guiding you into a state of peace.
"and the tears come streaming down your face,
when you lose something you can't replace,
when you love someone but it goes to waste,
could it be worse?"
He continued to stroke your hair as your sobs completely stopped, being replaced with silent tears that carried the black of your mascara down your face at a slower rate.
"Light will guide you home,
and ignite your bones,
and I will try to fix you"
Your eyes felt heavier as his gentle voice calmed you, every worry you had fading to the back of your mind as you focus on his voice, your eyes closing, your breathing becoming even.
"And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth"
You wanted to stay up and listen, but you found it harder and harder to fight the peaceful sleep that his beautiful voice brought so you embraced it, letting yourself slip into sleep.
He smiled down at you and kissed you on the forehead, before getting out of bed gently and pulling the covers up over you. He looked down at you, and gently sang
"Light will guide you home,
and ignite your bones,
and I will try to fix you"
before he turned and regretfully left through your window, wishing he could hold you forever and catch all the tears that fell from your eyes, share all the giggles that left your lips and make you skip a heartbeat like you made him do every time he looked down at you as you slept peacefully.
But he knew it wasn't possible, for he was and will forever be nothing more than your guardian angel, only stepping in when you needed him, and leaving once you were asleep, wishing for him to stay.
