After changing and heading toward the dining room we were all seated around except for Rose. The bald man came in carrying a tray with a champagne glass in saying, "You companion begs, an apology Doctor. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her."
As the man walked around the Doctor said, "O, that's all right. Save her a wee bit of ham."
As he finished saying that her majesty said, "The feral child could probably eat it raw." a soldier let out a nervous laugh at the terrible joke and said, "Very wise ma'am, very witty."
In return the queen said, "Slightly witty perhaps." making me grin behind a my drink of water, "I know you rarely get the chance to dine with me, Captain, but don't get too excited." after a slight pause she continued, "I shall contain my wit in case I do you further injury."
"Yes ma'am." The captain replied, "Sorry ma'am."
That's when the Doctor spoke up, "Beside, we're waiting on Sir Robert. Come sir, you promised us a tale of nightmares."
I perked up at this excited to hear what he was going to say.
"Indeed." The queen said almost as excited as I am, "Since my husbands death I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction." The queen finished.
"You must miss him." The Doctor inquired
"Very much." Was her reply then after a slight pause as she thought things over, "Oh, completely." he voice was more open than it was for most of the day. She really did miss her husband.
Than she looked at the Doctor making a small smile play on her lips, "And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and the chills that's just for children. But the...hope of some contact with the great beyond. We all want some message from that place. It's the creator's greatest mystery. That we are allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent."
I looked at my plate not feeling much hunger as I knew what she was talking about. I missed my mom and dad and I don't even know if they are happy wherever they are.
"And we must wait." The queen finished and after gathering herself up again said, "Come. Begin your tale Sir Robert. There's a chill in the air. The wind is howling through the eaves. Tell us of monsters."
I peeked over at the Doctor and saw that he could also understand what The queen was saying but then started to pay attention to Sir Robert.
"The story goes back 300 years. Every full moon, the howling rings through the valley. The next morning, livestock is found, ripped apart and de-devoured." You can tell Robert is afraid of something and I tried to think of what it was as the Captain commented.
"Oh, tales like this just disguise the work of thieves. Steal a sheep and blame a wolf, simple as that."
"But sometimes a child goes missing." Sir Robert said, "Once in every generation, a boy will vanish from his homestead."
"Are there descriptions of the creature?" I asked looking at Sir Robert with interest.
"Oh yes. Drawings and woodcarvings, and it's not merely a wolf. It's more than that. This is a man who becomes an animal."
This got the Doctor's interest and mine as the Doctor leaned forward, "A werewolf." he asked his face showing some excitement.
"My father didn't treat it as a story. He said it was fact. He even claimed to have communicated with the beast, to have learned it's purpose. I should've listened." As Robert was saying this the man in tux walked toward the window.
"His work was hindered." Sir Robert was saying, "He made enemies. There's a monastery in the Glen of St.Catherine. The brethren opposed my father's investigations."
This time the queen spoke, "Perhaps they thought his work ungodly."
"That's what I thought." Sir Robert said but I sometimes got distracted in what he was saying because the man by the window was now whispering, "Lupus Magnus Est."
But Sir Robert continued to talk, "But now, I wonder, what if they had a different reason for wanting the story kept quiet?" We kept looking at the man who was starting to enchant a little louder than before.
"What if they turned from god and worshipped the wolf?" Sir Robert finished and the Doctor and I both got what he was saying as everything clicked.
The Doctor leaned back, "And what if they were with us right now?"
