For the ones who have fallen in love,
Out of love
And the ones who love their cats1) That's the way the cupcake crumbles
Love is right around the corner is a phrase that is too overused and completely false. I obviously live in a very round circle because I don't see any corners coming up anytime soon. I don't mind living in a circle though, some of the best things in the world are round; Cheese, Pie, Cake, Pizza and who could forget the pièce de resistance.
Cupcakes.
The perfect mouth size bite of heavenly bliss that you can hold in your hand. Combining the endless possibilities of flavours as well as the simplicity of a light fluffy cake and the sugary goodness of the icing, you are left in a state of bliss. This is what love is to me. Being able to melt away into sweet oblivion and forget that eating too many cupcakes will leave you with diabetes.
"Mackenzie! Zoe said I'd find you here." Bringing me out of my cupcake induced coma Jay Sew pulls out a plastic chair beside me giving a crooked smile. "I guess I caught you red-handed," he laughs awkwardly.
I stare down at the table and realise that there is a half-eaten red velvet cupcake sitting in front of me. Whatever came out of my mouth at that moment was in no way a lady like giggle or could even be classified laugh. Nope. It was a pig snorting while having an asthma attack.
Students in the library all turn and stare at the girl that is making the horrific noises. I smile back at Jay, ignoring the abnormal silence that has now fallen over the large room. "Red-handed. Ah yes, I get it because of the cupcake... yeah I love buns. Wait I mean puns. That's the right word and you're not stopping me from rambling. Please say something."
"Walk with me?" Letting out a relieved breath I follow him out into the hallway. The bustle of people running to lunch keeps us glued together which I don't mind. It's away handy to have someone taller than you by your side just in case you get lost or need something from the top shelf.
Jay has been my long-time maths buddy since year 7 we have sat next to each other and drowned in Algebra. Thank the lord for alphabetical assigned seating. He can easily be mistaken by a tree with his tall and lanky build and bottle green blazers. But he is a loyal friend who gives me his notes in exchange for sweets, which I always am in supply of in case of bribing emergencies or low blood sugar.
Manoeuvring us around the students till we get to a small clearing behind the canteen he finds us a safe place to talk. "Lunch."
I stare at him confused "Yes Jay, it is indeed lunchtime. The time when we realise that once again we chose 15 minutes of extra sleep instead of food."
"Tomorrow do you want to have lunch together?"
"Oh. OHHHH. Yeah, feel free to come sit with Zoe, Char-"
He combs his fingers through his hair making it stand up in odd directions "I mean just you and me," My eyes widen for a second not quite sure what is happening. Jay catches my confusion and continues "Not that I don't like your friends it's just I'm actually moving in a couple of days and I wanted to say thank you for, you know, being my friend and whatnot."
My heart breaks a little at the news. "Leaving? You can't leave me, especially with our assessments coming up soon. Who is going to listen to me complain about graphs and trig?"
I see the sadness in his eyes, knowing he doesn't have much of a choice. Putting on a brave face I smile "Well we will have to make sure it's the best lunch you've ever had. I'll whip up something for the occasion."
