23)What Even Is Logic
I can feel their gazes drilling in on me and my cupcake.
"Can't a girl get some privacy with her food around here?"
My friends are sitting in front of me completely silent. They haven't taken their eyes off me since I had gotten into the car this morning.
I'm trying to understand why they're being so careful with every word they've said. Our conversations have consisted of the topics of weather, Netflix, and hats. These are not interesting things to talk about.
I've also noticed the quick glances they give each other when I'm not looking.
This is what I get for keeping them updated with my uneventful life. When I explained the situation to Charlie he offered to go around to Aaron's house to 'teach him a lesson'. While Zoe's reaction was more appropriate with her offering me a tub of cookie dough ice cream.
I don't blame either of them for stepping around the Aaron subject carefully but come on, I'm almost 18. I think I know how to keep calm and get over situations quickly. I've had a lot of practice not murdering my entire grade for annoying me.
"Did you really take 16 cupcakes from the shop yesterday?" this is the first sentence over five words that they have spoken today. It's kind of a relief because I was scared they were becoming mute.
"Maybe..." I look to see them staring at me in disbelief.
"Do you need 16 cupcakes?" Their eyes flicker between the box of cupcakes and me who has half of one stuffed in my mouth.
Hastily I swallow "Okay, to be fair she was going to throw all 24 beautiful delicious cupcakes in the bin. It's a waste and a criminal offense to chuck out something so tasty. So I just happened to volunteer to take them home... without anyone knowing..." I lick some of the buttercream that had fallen onto my hand.
"I believe that's called stealing," a voice says from behind me. I don't know if I want to acknowledge his presence or not. That would make everything that happened on the weekend more real.
I shovel the rest of the cupcake in my mouth and chew slowly "It's not stealing if the cupcakes willingly came with me, " I counter back, sweeping the crumbs off my lap.
A pair of arms circles around me and hugs me from behind. Yep, that's not creepy or a violation of personal space at all.
"Hello, my favourite math and cooking buddy. Give me some sugar," Lee squeezes me tightly, but that's not what's making me feel like I'm choking. Whatever deodorant that he is wearing is contaminating my personal bubble. Elbowing him in the stomach is my way of telling him to back away before I do something I'll regret.
"I'll give you sugar, diabetes, and death if you don't take three decent steps away from me. Whatever you're wearing is polluting my lungs, " I grumble back. I'm not in the mood for physical touch.
Am I ever?"You don't like my new cologne? It's supposed to make me irresistible to woman," Lee gives me a toothy grin while attempting to wiggle his eyebrows.
"Yes irresistible, as in I have an overwhelming urge to get as far away from you as possible. At the same time as throwing you into a river with a bar of lavender soap," Maybe I should offer him an air freshener to make him smell better all year round.
Sam takes the awkward silence as an invitation to start a conversation. "Looks like you're stocking up on a whole lot of sugary carbs there Mace. What's the occasion?"
"Well, I believe it was you who inspired me to eat away my feelings. So I chose these cupcakes because they were easily accessible and I want to eliminate any type of memory of yesterday or of he shall not be named." I didn't want any type of reminder about what went down yesterday afternoon so when I saw the cupcakes sitting on the bench at the end of the day I took them as a sign of rebellion and hunger.
