Chapter 5: Shroud
I hurried out of the cab as I knew my destination was awaiting me.
"Miss, here is your $80." The cabby said handing me a wad of twenties.
"Keep it." I spoke to the cabby.
"But miss—“
I went inside the mall with security checking bags. I went in front of a hippie with long sandals and short hair but with an indie shirt upside down.
"Madam your bag please?"
"Oh here I'm sorry." I spoke and handed out my bag and went inside a monitor checking me for whatever they want to find that is illegal, I guess.
"No problem madam."
I went inside and looked around. It was like heaven but just with stores surrounding it. But my mission was nonetheless just to look for my human, Serina Longchild.
I looked at each of the stores and searched the whole building in a swift when I noticed a couple about the age of Serina sitting down on a table as one stood up heading over to a store called Twixies, they were in the food court.
"Serina, is that you?" I said as I neared her.
"Woah, who are you?" Serina shivered.
"What are you doing here, are your cold?" I spoke with grief and happiness of finding her. She looked really surprised, but who wouldn’t be, there guardian angel coming down just to save them right?
"I'm with Christopher. He's just getting drinks." She said out of a sudden. “Wait what the hell, who are you?”
"You’re cold. Are you okay?" I said, trying to touch her like a protective guardian, but she moved backward.
"Yeah I'm fine. Um, who are you?"
"Here hot chocolate for you." he gave the cup to Serina and sat down. “Um, who is this, Ser?” he asked Serina as he looked at me.
"Do you want some?" Serina got the cup up from the table and pointed it towards me.
"Um no, but can I talk to you in private."
"Sure. Um here sit down." She said pointing towards the chair beside her as she twisted around to face the chair. I hurried and went to the seat and looked at Christopher as he eyed me curiously as if I would just kidnap Serina right away, but I would if he wouldn’t leave.
"Can he leave us for a while?" I asked Serina.
"Um, can you?" she asked him, giving him a little pouty face to seal the deal.
"Yeah sure, that’s not a problem." Christopher said. “Just call out for me, I’ll be there.” He said pointing out to a corner where they sold hotdogs.
"Thanks." Serina said.
He stuttered and left us both.
"I'm sorry. Christopher is just my--"
"You’re best friend." I interrupted.
"Yeah how did you know?" she asked. “Do I know you from somewhere? Have we even met?”
I chuckled a little and looked at her, still amazed that I actually made it, I made it, I’m here, so why not just tell her. But wouldn’t she be like freaked out or something, I had to keep it cool.
"I just sort of know." I said. “And no, you don’t know me from somewhere, we haven’t even met until now, and I’m glad we have.” I said holding both her hands unto mines as if I was her mother.
"Oh so what did you want to talk about?" she said trying to get her hands out of my aggressive lock.
"Um, well you see, I just have a teenie tiny question, why do you feel sorry for people?"
"Um, excuse me. I do not feel sorry for people, I just…” she said.
“You do not lie.” I told her in a serious tone, and she looked down.
“Well because it just feels right helping them." She said immediately as she looked down.
"Why do you want to help them when they hurt you? Doesn’t that hurt you?"
"It’s better to know that I’m hurt then their souls hurting, I would be more hurt knowing that I didn’t do everything to actually help them, to actually save them, so I would rather let them hurt me then me not helping them, cause equally, I get the same treatment right?"
"Oh! That's exciting and wonderful. But why didn't you ever say that in your dream?" then I clasped my mouth with my free hand.
"Well. Um people my snoop around I've heard Angels go in to our room and listen to us." She said. “Wait what?”
"Really, do you think it’s a bit strange?” she eyed me curiously. “I meant the snooping?”
"Yeah, I guess so but I’m used to it I guess, why?”
“Nothing.” I told her.
“You wouldn’t believe this, but I actually, I like them, I love it when they go inside cause I feel like I’m protected even though I’m not looking." She said. “You know, I’m safe and stuff.”
"Do you believe in that stuff?"
“Which stuff?” she asked.
“Angels.”
"Yeah, I guess so, why?"
"Well I want to ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you know a man by the name of, Laurie Greens?"
"Yeah he's my English teacher. He's the best that's all I can tell."
"Oh," He’s the best now ain’t it Luke, then why is he getting in trouble then? Huh? Want to explain it to me up there? I thought.
"Yeah, isn’t it great, I finally like someone in the faculty ever since Mrs. Fields transferred to the county graduate school.” She said looking down.
She was still sad about her previous Biology teacher.
"Um, I guess that’s great then, it would help you forget about Mrs. Fields."
"How did you know him again?" she asked me. “Mr. Greens.”
"Um, his best friend told me to meet him."
"So you’re asking right?"
“Asking what?” I asked.
“His address silly.”
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Didn't your friend tell you were he lives?"
"No not at all. Just told me to follow where the wind goes."
"Oh! That’s not very helpful, sure I could help you, just, here. Um, I got to go now here this is the time. Bye."
She left running towards Christopher, who was shocked and taken aback as she hugged him immediately.
And that's when I remembered how I felt like that before. Safe, protected, warm through love, now I remembered everything again like how I felt when I was with him.
I missed him a lot. Luke. I just forgot about him.
I stood up and saw a post-it stuck on my leather jacket. It reads.
'He goes to class every Tuesdays 3:00 morning go there before. He's never on time for class. See you there ^_^.'
Then I said to myself. Maybe what she said was true. That whatever good you do you'd go back to heaven. So maybe that's my ticket out of here.
So I grabbed my bag and caught a cab.
"Hotel Marine, please."
"Starting at $2, madam"
"Yeah, sure."
