Chapter 19:

I ran down the hallways, away from the ball and away from Eric.

The hallways became longer and darker. I ran down another and was met by double doors. Running to them, I looked out the glass.

But I couldn’t see anyone out there.

I creaked the door open, just enough so I could fit through and slip out into the night.

The sky was dark blue and purple hues morphing into black. I sighed in its beauty as I walked quietly trying to go unnoticed if anyone came out.

I ran towards a hedge and hid behind it. I turned and noticed that I had just entered a maze.

Suddenly I heard a howl, a dogs howl. Then again, I did notice that there had been security and dogs as I had entered the…palace. Shock ran through me veins and my blood went cold.

Could the dogs smell me? I wondered. Then again, they were dogs…highly trained dogs.

I ran.

Which was one of the stupidest things I have done because five minutes later, I was lost.

Turning around in all directions, all I found were walls of the bushy shrubs and nowhere to go. The further I tried to get out and away from the dogs the more lost and confused I got. I ran to another side and found my way another few walls then became stuck once again.

I began to panic as the dogs were coming closer and I was getting more and more lost. I heard someone yell something and I ran in the opposite direct of where I was standing.

My breath was caught in my throat as I came face to face with a dog.

“G-good d-dog.” I said eyes wide.

It barked at me and barred its teeth. I stepped backwards and nearly screamed when my back hit something. I turned quickly still keeping my eyes on the dog as I saw…Charis?

I frowned. “What the fuck!?” I yelled.

My breathing was labored as my panic meter reached higher levels.

“What the hell are you doing here?” He asked, eyes wide.

He was holding a girl in his arms and looked like he had been drinking from her.

“I…don’t know…” I breathed, eyeing the fuming dog that looked like he wanted to tear me to shreds. “Why are you here?” I looked at the pretty blond girl who was glaring at me. I blinked, “oh.”

“Do you know her?” She asked bitterly, which made me want to laugh.

He glanced at the girl, the dog, and then me, as if her were weighing up his options. “I might…” He trailed off, facing the girl but glancing down at me.

He seemed angry or protective of the girl in his arms. Not quite sure.

The yelling in the distance became clearer and more frequent. “S-sorry to gate crash your party but, I don’t t-think we can stay any longer.” I glared at the dog as it barked and snapped its jaws at me.

“We should split up,” Charis said. “If you go left, straight and then left again, there is an exit. We will go another way.” And then he walked off with the girl, leaving me for dead with the dog that was getting closer.

Left, straight and left…right?

I ran, following Charis’ directions.

Left.

Straight.

Left again.

Oh look, I’m lost.

I scowled as the dog barked at my retreating body.

I ran faster, trying to get away from the dog. I ran and ran, getting even more lost, till I came to a dead end.

I ran back out and bumped into something hard.

I looked up and saw Mr. Smith.

My eyes went wide as I took as step back. He frowned at me, obviously confused at my sudden presence.

I heard the dog bark. I turned to see it, eyes glowing and running towards Mr. Smith and I. It leaped into the air, ready to tear me to shreds when I was pulled away, being covered by Mr. Smith’s body. My hands were covering my head as my breaths were coming out ragged.

“Quick, run.” He ordered, pushing my back a bit. It scared me when he touched me, because I was scared he was going to do something stupid again. “Go, I’m coming too.” He took my arm and ran.

We ran through the maze and out of it, still running.

We got to the palace and went through a door, down a corridor and down a small set of stairs to the door that led to the door that opened to the ball room. He let go of my arm as we went through the doors and the music settled on us.

I looked up at him. “Thank…thank you.” I managed.

“No problem. Why were you there anyway?” He asked.

I looked to the floor, seeing my dress was all dirty on the end. “Don’t worry.” I whispered.

“Okay, fine then. But why were the dogs after you?”

I blinked. “Like I know?” I laughed.

He chuckled. “I guess not.”
