Chapter 21:

“Are we all here!? Have you checked your rooms? Have you checked your buddies? Are your friends here?” Eric shouted at the front of the portal beside Mrs. Beth – the s.o.s.e teacher - who was concentrating.

Charis had ditched me so I was standing at the back of the wonky line alone. I played with the skirt of my dress, sighing. Stupid Eric had dragged my back inside yesterday and made me mop the floors.

My head was killing me. I groaned, hoping it would go away. And now all thanks to that stupid headache, I was getting a fever from it too.

I massaged my temples and closed my eyes, hoping that the line would get smaller.

Lies, every last one.

My head throbbed and I opened my eyes once more.

“Looking a bit lonely there, hmmm?” Mr. Smith asked.

I grit my teeth. “I’m fine.” Was this guy a stalker? He’s everywhere I go.

I followed the people in front of me towards the exit in the portal. Mrs. Beth’s portal was a field filled with big, tall, yellow flowers complete with a setting sun. A light breeze rippled through the portal, and the flowers swayed in the same direction.

I stepped through the exit and was welcomed by a dark sky and a lit corridor. It was loud and everyone was making their ways back to their dorms. I was doing the same; to get dressed and get out. I didn’t want to witness another make-out-session.

I tugged the suit case up the stairs with me towards the dorms.

But the door was locked. I growled. He really hated me that much?

I pulled out a key, scowling. I thought we were friends? In the words of a human; “bro’s before hoes.”

The door creaked open to reveal…Charis; just Charis. No girl, no love making, Charis. He was wearing just jeans and was lying on the floor, staring up at the ceiling. He glanced at me and sighed, returning his gaze to the ceiling.

“What crawled up your ass and died?” He asked.

I realized I was still scowling. What had crawled up my ass and died, shouldn’t I be asking you that? I thought. I sighed, taking a baggy, green, pull over from the end of my bed and some jeans. I walked into the bathroom, got changed and left the dorm without a second glance at Charis.

The hallways were getting quieter by the minute as the tired students retired to their dorms for the night. It had been a depressing trip for me because I hadn’t gotten away; but also an eye opener because of…Eric. He was my childhood friend and I had shared some sweet memories with him. But some of them felt fake and weird. Some felt like a story I had never known.

Soon my footsteps were the only sound made as I went towards the library.

The door creaked open and I slipped in. It was silent. The dim lamps lit the tables and the library was empty. It was dark but comforting at the same time.

Curling up on a chair, I fell asleep.

“Classes will resume in two days, so rest up and finish all your homework. You may now go and eat.” The principal finished.
