Chapter 20:

He’s lying. They’re all lies, every one of them…

I woke up, sweaty and huffing.

I shot up out of bed and saw a pale faced Charis. He was standing at the end of the bed looking worried and confused. He frowned.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

Was I? I couldn’t remember the dream but…those words…Lies?

I nodded.

He nodded back, and then his face went hard. “Why were you in the maze last night?”

“I was t-trying to get away.”

“Get away?” He frowned, the same hard look remained.

I nodded. “Escape.”

“Why the maze then? Why not keep running?”

I sighed. “The dog?

“Oh. Still, why not somewhere else? I was busy with-”

“Will you shut up? I can’t even have a shower without you talking to…yourself…” The girl he had been with appeared from the bathroom in the inn’s room. “Why is she here? You do know her don’t you?” She scowled at me.

He whipped his face with his hand. “No, she just shares the room with me.” He looked at me, telling me to play along. Why was he acting so cold? Who was this nasty girl?

“Exactly.” I scowled at Charis. “I was going down to do my duties anyway.” I turned to the girl and put on a smile. “Can I please borrow the bathroom for a moment so I can change?”

“Don’t be sugar sweet about it, God. Go ahead.” She walked out.

I grit my teeth together and grabbed a sky blue dress out of my suit case and walked into the bathroom holding my boots.

I got dressed and tied my hair in a lazy pony tail then headed down stairs, ignoring Charis making out with the girl on his bed.

I grabbed a towel and started whipping down tables, putting some strength into it. I was so angry. Why didn’t I manage to get away? And why were Charis and his…friend… being so mean?

I let a tiny growl escape my lips as I rubbed the table harder, my head hurting like hell.

Where was Lord Kay-…I mean, Eric? I know that we were childhood friends, but…I can’t shake the feeling that, that is not the whole deal. It seemed so far away and still out of my reach. Like a child trying to get a hold of the cookie jar on the top shelf. But the cookie jar was my memories, and I had gotten it. But the deal was too sweet. There is always a price to pay.

“Up so early?”

I turned to see Mr. Smith.

Nodding, I faced the table and continued to scrub. Early? “What t-time is it?”

“Six in the morning.”

I blinked, moving to the next table.

“So why are you up so early? Get kicked out or just want to be up?”

Did it really matter? “Why are you up so early?” I scowled at a dot on the table.

“I don’t sleep very well.” He chuckled.
